Sounds
Terry Jennings
An introduction to sound, how it is made, how we hear it, and different kinds of sound. Includes study questions, activities, and experiments.

This volume provides an introduction to phonetics and speech science courses. The first chapters introduce basic acoustics, audition, digital signal processing, and the source filter theory of speech production, while the later chapters survey the major classes of speech sounds describing in detail their acoustic and auditory properties. Students in linguistic phonetics and speech science will find this a gentle, yet rigorous, introduction to some of the more technical aspects of computer speech analysis which are assumed in modern instrumental studies of speech, distinctive feature theory, and the acoustic characterization of speech pathology.

The purpose of this monograph is to give the broad aspects of nonlinear identification and control using neural networks. It consists of three parts: - an introduction to the fundamental principles of neural networks; - several methods for nonlinear identification using neural networks; - various techniques for nonlinear control using neural networks. A number of simulated and industrial examples are used throughout the monograph to demonstrate the operation of nonlinear identification and control techniques using neural networks. It should be emphasised that the methods and systems of nonlinear control have not progressed as rapidly as those for linear control. Comparatively speaking, at the present time, they are still in the development stage. We believe that the fundamental theory, various design methods and techniques, and several applications of nonlinear identification and control using neural networks that are presented in this monograph will enable the reader to analyse and synthesise nonlinear control systems quantitatively.

From the back cover: WHEN OGRE-HOOD WAS IN FLOWER Smash knew all about ogres. After all, despite his having a human mother, Smash was an ogre himself. Ogres were not only huge and horribly ugly, as Smash was; they were also so stupid they could hardly speak, and they spent most of their time fighting, destroying, and eating young girls. So what was he doing here with seven assorted females looking to him to guide them and save them? Even in Xanth, where magic made anything possible, why should Tandy the Nymph trust him and seem fond of him? And how could all that high-flown conversation be coming out of his mouth? But that, it seemed, was what he got for going to Good Magician Humphrey for an Answer -- before he even knew what the Question was!
