Advances in knowledge discovery and data mining

by Takashi Washio ... [et al.] (eds (2008)

About this book

"This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, PAKDD 2008, held in Osaka, Japan, in May 2008." "The 37 revised long papers, 40 revised full papers, and 36 revised short papers presented together with 1 keynote talk and 4 invited lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from 312 submissions. The papers present new ideas, original research results, and practical development experiences from all KDD-related areas including data mining, data warehousing, machine learning, databases, statistics, knowledge acquisition, automatic scientific discovery, data visualization, causal induction, and knowledge-based systems."--Jacket.

Ontologies

Dieter Fensel

Ontologies have been developed and investigated for some time in artificial intelligence to facilitate knowledge sharing and reuse. More recently, the notion of ontologies has attracted attention from fields such as databases, intelligent information integration, cooperative information systems, information retrieval, electronic commerce, enterprise application integration, and knowledge management. This broadened interest in ontologies is based on the feature that they provide a machine-processable semantics of information sources that can be communicated among agents as well as between software artifacts and humans. This feature makes ontologies the backbone technology of the next web generation, i.e., the Semantic Web. Ontologies are currently applied in areas such as knowledge management in large company-wide networks and call centers, and in B2C, B2G, and B2B electronic commerce. In a nutshell, ontologies enable effective and efficient access to heterogeneous and distributed information sources. Given the increasing amount of information available online, this kind of support is becoming more important day by day. The author systematically introduces the notion of ontologies to the non-expert reader and demonstrates in detail how to apply this conceptual framework for improved intranet retrieval of corporate information and knowledge and for enhanced Internet-based electronic commerce. He also describes ontology languages (XML, RDF, and OWL) and ontology tools, and the application of ontologies. In addition to structural improvements, the second edition covers recent developments relating to the Semantic Web, and emerging web-based standard languages.

"A comprehensive, authoritative, and up-to-date overview of state-of-the-art coastal zone GIS applications, this practical book places the science in a management context. The chapters present groundbreaking coastal applications of GIS-based decision support tools, spatial data infrastructures, remote sensing technology including LiDAR and CASI, and more. Covering a broad range of topics, the organization of this volume supplies a flow and structure that make the information easily accessible and immediately applicable."--BOOK JACKET.

Rough sets and current trends in computing

James J. Alpigini ... [et al.] (eds

This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the Third Inter- tional Conference on Rough Sets and Current Trends in Computing (RSCTC 2002) held at Penn State Great Valley, Malvern, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., 14–16 October 2002. Rough set theoryand its applications constitute a branch of soft computing that has exhibited a signi?cant growth rate during recent years. RSCTC 2002 provided a forum for exchanging ideas among manyresearchers in the rough set communityand in various areas of soft computing and served as a stimulus for mutual understanding and cooperation. In recent years, there have been a number of advances in rough set theoryand applications. Hence, we have witnessed a growing number of international workshops on rough sets and their applications. In addition, it should be observed that one of the beauties of rough sets and the rough set philosophyis that it tends to complement and reinforce research in manytraditional research areas and applications. This is the main reason that manyinternational conferences are now including rough sets into the list of topics.

Database semantics

Robert Meersman, Zahir Tari, Scott Stevens

"Database Semantics: Semantic issues in Multimedia Systems reflects the state of the art of emerging research on the meaning of multimedia information, as presented during IFIP's Eighth Data Semantics Working Conference (DS-8), organized by its Working Group 2.8 on Databases, and held at Rotorua, New Zealand in January 1999. DS-8 was planned as an active forum for researchers and practitioners focusing on those issues that involve the semantics of the information represented, stored, and manipulated by multimedia systems. Depending on the topic and state of research, issues may be covered deeply theoretically or quite practically, or even both."--BOOK JACKET.
