About this book

All for Liberty is based on the true story of Captain Henry Felder whose determination to resist tyranny led to his long bitter fight against the British Empire during America's War for Independence. A Swiss-German immigrant farmer in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Felder is convinced to respond to British tyranny by writing an Articles of Separation from the English king and raising his own militia, including a female tavern owner who gathers a patriot spy ring. Long lost from historical record, Felder's stand along with other militia leaders in the backcountry of South Carolina from 1776-1780 was instrumental in diverting British troops and energies while George Washington's army lay nearly defeated far to the north. - Publisher. Essays on modern American drama

Dorothy Parker

This anthology gathers some of Modern Drama's most distinguished pieces on America's four most important playwrights since Eugene O'Neill: Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Edward Albee, and Sam Shepard. While Parker has chosen these authors "as representative of the main stream of American dramatic tradition," she does not offer a general overview of the plays or playwrights, nor any general orientation to aid the reader. These essays are written by scholars for serious students of American drama. The majority of the essays concentrate on a single play, and while they appeared decades ago, all were major articles in the field. Old but solid, they should still be of interest to students and scholars alike.

Newton Frohlich

In the early sixteenth century, a precocious young nobleman draws the attention of the Elizabethan court--and of The Virgin Queen herself. A writer and patron of the arts, Edward de Vere is volatile, controversial--and brilliant. He leaves a trail of women and scandal in his wake. But his plays, when he's in the queen's good graces, charm the court. His sonnets turn feelings into sound. Yet the rules of the court say a nobleman may not publish. An earl's name is too sacred for the theater. If de Vere must write, he must do so anonymously, and employ a runner, an almost illiterate cobbler's son from Stratford, to claim his words. Newton Frohlich, an attorney and the author of the celebrated historical novel 1492, spent fifteen years researching unexplored questions about the poet and playwright we today know as Shakespeare. His is an intimate tour of English castles, Venetian canals, and a complex man who penned the most beloved works of the English language.--

Coyness and crime in restoration comedy

Peggy Thompson

"Coyness and Crime examines the extraordinary focus on feminine coyness in forty English comedies by ten diverse playwrights of the late seventeenth-century. In contexts ranging from reaffirmations of church and king to emerging interests in liberty and novelty, these plays consistently reveal women caught in an ironic and nearly intractable convergence of objectification and culpability that allows them little innocent sexual agency; this is both the source and the legacy of coyness in Restoration comedy"--
