About this book

"Angura: Posters of the Japanese Avant-Garde presents the extraordinary posters created for a group of experimental Japanese theater troupes during the 1960s and 1970s. The term angura (underground) accurately describes the nature of this countercultural theater movement. Rejecting the standards and mores of modern drama and dance, the politically-charged plays and performances of these theater groups were purposefully outrageous and provocative. Similarly, the designers who created posters for these companies rebelled against the conventions of contemporary Japanese design culture and international modernism. Combining the vivid and sexually explicit elements of sixties psychedelia with traditional Japanese design and printmaking techniques, these posters are artifacts of a tumultuous period in both Japanese graphic arts and society as a whole."--BOOK JACKET. "Author David G. Goodman illuminates the theatrical movement for which these posters were created, provides a brief history of modern Japanese graphic design, and describes both the posters themselves and the artists who created them."--BOOK JACKET.

[exhibition curated by Tim Wilcox

"This book brings together for the first time Sean Scully's images of the walls of Aran, revealing the unexpected yet monumental beauty of these centuries-old structures that meander across the austere and exposed landscape. In form and spirit, the photographs of the walls, with their horizontal and vertical shards of limestone, shed light on Scully's own sensibilities as an artist, revealing a creative process expressed through abstract shapes yet rooted in the material world. They also capture the stillness and serenity of this rugged, timeless place on the edge of Europe."--Jacket.

Red figure vases of South Italy and Sicily

A.D. Trendall

"The red figure vases produced by the Greek colonists in South Italy and Sicily in the later fifth and the fourth centuries BC were at first closely modeled on Athenian prototypes. But they quickly evolved, exhibiting the highly individual styles and characteristics that are explored in this fascinating study. The red figure vases of the period are not only immensely pleasing as works of art, but of great interest and importance for the light they shed on mythology and drama, local customs and the relations between the Greek settlers and the native inhabitants. Some of the latter, especially in Apulia, seem to have acquired considerable wealth and wer able to indulge their taste for very large vases, elaborately decorated with exuberant floral pattern-work and multi-figured compositions. Close to 600 illustrations reproduce a wide selection of the more significant vases, and demonstrate not only their considerable artistry, but also the endless fascination of their subject matter."--Publisher description.

Horst

Susanna Brown

"The first major book to celebrate the entire career of legendary fashion photographer Horst P. Horst. The first comprehensive book on Horst P. Horst, this richly illustrated survey accompanies a retrospective of the photographer's career, spanning fashion, nudes, portraiture, interiors, and art, at the Victoria and Albert Museum. For an incredible six decades, Horst's work graced the pages and covers of Vogue, beginning in the 1930s alongside luminaries such as Cecil Beaton and George Hoyningen-Huene. With equal admiration for the physical ideals of classical sculpture and the surrealism of Salvador Dali, Horst crafted some of fashion's most iconic images. Newly researched essays follow the photographer as he captured--and mingled with--the great thinkers, designers, and muses of his day, among them Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel. Known first as a master photographer of French and British couture, Horst also left his mark on interior and lifestyle photography with his work in House & Garden. This survey traces a career remarkable for its range, daring, and depth."--

Joseph Cornell/Marcel Duchamp --in resonance

[introduction, Anne D'Harnoncourt

"This book chronicles the friendship and working relationship between Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) and Joseph Cornell (1903-1972), two of the twentieth century's most innovative and influential artists. Joseph Cornell/Marcel Duchamp...in resonance publishes for the first time the Duchamp Dossier (c. 1942-53) - a hitherto publicly unknown collection compiled by Cornell and discovered in the artist's estate following his death in 1972. The small objects, typed and handwritten notes, and ephemera found within the Duchamp Dossier provide an absorbing record of the interchange between these two artists, which included Cornell's assisting Duchamp on the assembly of his edition de ou par Marcel Duchamp ou Rrose Selavy (commonly referred to as the Boite-en-valise)." "Both artists were intrigued by the connection between art and the found object, and they shared a fascination with replicated images and the processes of reproduction. They had parallel interests in optical devices, ephemeral mediums (such as glass, dust, and paper), filmmaking, and graphic design. The book focuses in depth on Duchamp's box editions and Cornell's often neglected "explorations," arranged files of printed matter, notes, and ephemera related to individuals or specific themes."--BOOK JACKET.
