About this book

Born in Calabria, Italy, in 1942, Anna Maria Maiolino is one of the leading artists of her generation. Her work reflects the major cultural and political realities of postwar Europe and South America as well as issues of patriarchy, feminism, and immigration. This book presents her prints, drawings, sculpture, photography, video, and performance pieces. From her early woodcuts, which spoke directly to the tense political atmosphere of her adopted country of Brazil, to her introspective works on paper-every aspect of Maiolino's incredibly diverse and accomplished career is presented in exquisite illustrations and with a series of informed and provocative essays. Exhibition: The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, United States (04.08.-27.11.2017).

Allan McCollum

(essay by Craig Owens

Since the late 1970s, Allan McCollum (b. 1944, Los Angeles, lives in New York) has addressed the production, distribution, acquisition, display, and reading of the artwork. His constant use of strategies of multiplication, his examination of the museum as a discursive agent, and his recurrent interest in notions of display, as well as his attempt to find a generic form for any purpose, were entirely reconfigured by this displacement of context. Working with regional museums, heterogeneous audiences, and references ranging from palaeontology to mineralogy, McCollum has built a very strong and intriguing body of works that has remained, in large part, unknown to (or at least unseen by) the art world.

Peter Alexander

essays by Dave Hickey and Naomi Vine

"Peter Alexander: In This Light is the first full-scale monograph on this artist, who for over three decades has been an active force in shaping the art and culture of California. The book includes work spanning Alexander's entire career to date, from the cast resin sculptures of the late 1960s to the recent Las Vegas paintings. Essays by art critic Dave Hickey and by Orange County Museum of Art Director Naomi Vine probe the central issues raised by Alexander in his work: the problems surrounding the concept of beauty in making art today. Vine examines the suspect nature of beauty in art in our time, while Hickey discusses the supreme challenge of attempting to create art in paradise.". "In addition to the critical essays, extensive documentation details the career of Peter Alexander, not only illuminating Alexander's life but shedding light on a time in California art when the Light and Space movement was emerging as an important, innovative, and distinctly West Coast approach to art-making."--BOOK JACKET.

Silver and Gold includes works by Robert Vance, P. M. Batchelder, William Shew, Frederick Coombs, and W. H. Rulofson - images of native Californians and those who shared the land with them, memorable images of the men and women who sought their fortunes in the gold fields. Photographs from the mining communities reflect the miners' rough houses, sunburned faces, and makeshift clothes, capturing the isolation and determination of people working under difficult conditions far from home. Essays by John Wood, poet and founding president of the Daguerreian Society; Peter Palmquist, independent scholar and curator in the field of photography; and Drew Johnson and Marcia Eymann, co-curators of the Oakland Museum exhibition that complements this volume, enhance these striking early images. In addition, annotations on the back of the photographs and written accounts of the experiences they record provide glimpses into the intentions of the photographers.
