Building the data warehouse

by W.H. Inmon (1992)

About this book

The data warehouse solves the problem of getting information out of legacy systems quickly and efficiently. If designed and built right, data warehouses can provide significant freedom of access to data, thereby delivering enormous benefits to any organization. In this unique handbook, W. H. Inmon, "the father of the data warehouse," provides detailed discussion and analysis of all major issues related to the design and construction of the data warehouse, including granularity of data, partitioning data, metadata, lack of creditability of decision support systems (DSS) data, the system of record, migration and more. This Second Edition of Building the Data Warehouse is revised and expanded to include new techniques and applications of data warehouse technology and update existing topics to reflect the latest thinking. It includes a useful review checklist to help evaluate the effectiveness of the design.

Database semantics

Robert Meersman, Zahir Tari, Scott Stevens

"Database Semantics: Semantic issues in Multimedia Systems reflects the state of the art of emerging research on the meaning of multimedia information, as presented during IFIP's Eighth Data Semantics Working Conference (DS-8), organized by its Working Group 2.8 on Databases, and held at Rotorua, New Zealand in January 1999. DS-8 was planned as an active forum for researchers and practitioners focusing on those issues that involve the semantics of the information represented, stored, and manipulated by multimedia systems. Depending on the topic and state of research, issues may be covered deeply theoretically or quite practically, or even both."--BOOK JACKET.

Numeric databases

Ching-chih Chen, Peter Hernon

The purpose of this book is to provide readers with the fundamentals of numeric databases and draw attention to them, their value, and utility to libraries and information centers. The public needs access to information which does not always appear in print format. Libraries and information centers must be aware of these resources, and recognize that they are essential information sources for a growing number of subjects. Subjects where the use of large sets of statistical data is becoming common are particularly important. This book is aimed at those readers wanting an introduction to many facets of the subject.

The RAND Metadata Management System (RMMS)

Stephanie Cammarata ... [et al

This report describes the RAND Metadata Management System (RMMS), a system that manages metadata--definitional and descriptional information about databases, simulation models, and procedures--for relational databases such as those maintained in INGRES. Many of these databases have little documentation or other descriptional information to accompany them, making it difficult for users to understand the definitions, abbreviations, acronyms, and descriptions of the data elements stored and maintained in a database management system. The authors developed the RMMS with five major goals in mind: (1) provide complete, thorough, and standard database documentation; (2) record and manage information about different versions of each database; (3) maintain a history of the changes made to database tables, schema, or data values; (4) facilitate deriving databases for input to simulation models and for sharing among models; and (5) standardize the names of data elements that are conceptually the same but named differently or are named the same but are conceptually different. This report should be of help to users of other relational databases who would like to develop a similar metadata repository for their own set of databases.
