Central tendency and variability

by Herbert F. Weisberg (1992)

About this book

"Using a clear, expository style that builds from simple to more complex topics, Weisberg explains how to measure the center and variation on a single variable. Beginning with an exploration of how to measure variables with different numeric or nonnumeric properties, the volume covers such important topics as how to examine distribution of variables, how to measure the spread of a variable in order to see how much the values on the variable differ, how to generalize the sample results to the population, and the use of exploratory data analysis to measure center and spread. Researchers, practitioners, and students who need a "refresher" before doing a bivariate or multivariate analysis will find this book the perfect guide."--Pub. desc.

Qualitative evaluation methods

Michael Quinn Patton

Abstract: Patton's Qualitative Evaluation Methods is geared toward the scientific researcher or applied social scientist who wants to expand his or her evaluation repertoire. It is not a "how to" book, but rather it serves as a reference for scholarly exploration of alternatives to strictly quantitative evaluation processes. The book will assist social scientist in determining when it is appropriate to use qualitative methods and how to get useful and valid data. Patton present a flexible approach to the se lection of evaluation methods. It is known as the paradigm of choices: using different methods for different situations. The emphasis is on the importance of understanding the background and context of a situation in order to analyze and interpret data. The text is divided into three parts. Part I is concerned with conceptual issues in the use of qualitative methods for evaluation research. Topics in this selection include the definition and recognition of qualitative data, qualitative method strategies, theoretical bases and ideals for qualitative research, and the development of multimodal evaluation designs. The compatibility of qualitative evaluation methods with different evaluation models and processes is presented. Patton sets forth a checklist of evaluation situation for which qualitative methods are appropriate. Part II deals with collecting qualitative data. Covered in this section are such things as strategies and techniques for qualitative interviewing, the stages of fieldwork, the importance of field notes, and various methods of observation. Part III focuses on the analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of qualitative data. The emphasis is on deriving useful information which is supported by theory to help in decision-making processes.

"Qualitative Research Methods in Human Geography is a comprehensive, accessible, and practical guide to conducting qualitative research in human geography. Building on the strengths of the first edition, and expanded and enhanced by nine new chapters, this latest edition teaches students how to plan, conduct, interpret, and communicate qualitative research."--Jacket.

Statistics and data analysis in geology

John C. Davis

This thoroughly revised edition presents important methods in the quantitative analysis of geologic data. Retains the basic arrangement of the previous edition but expands sections on probability, nonparametric statistics, and Fourier analysis. Contains revised coverage of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and new coverage of data analysis methods, such as the semivariogram and the process of kriging.

Historic Preservation in the USA

Karolin Frank, Patricia Petersen

Since the 1960s, public attention has been drawn increasingly towards the thematic link between historic preservation and urban planning. Nowadays, the organized historic preservation movement in the USA is more than a mere "yearning for history": it represents an active and integral part of urban planning in US cities. In order to approach these planning, economic, and social issues in the field of historic preservation, this book analyzes a variety of interdisciplinary methods, focusing on four selected historic districts within the central business districts of Philadelphia and Boston (in the north) and Charleston and Savannah (in the south).
