Competing Against America

by Michael Alexander (2005)

About this book

"In this book, Michael Alexander has a message for all Canadians: our standard of living is in free fall, and has been for almost 25 years. Currently, Canada's standard of living is 20 percent lower than America's. The author asks why we have failed to achieve our economic potential, and many will find the reasons hard to accept. Some of our most cherished beliefs and values have turned out to be misguided and harmful to our well-being." "When offering solutions, the author turns to the United States, not to advocate the adoption of American ideas and policies as a cure-all, but to pinpoint best practices that have made America the world's foremost economic power. He argues that by combining these practices with our own overdue reforms, we can begin to challenge the thinking that has held us back, and fulfill the promise of the just society." "Competing Against America is a wake-up call for Canada. It's a guide to a more prosperous future. But, as the author stresses, we can get there only if we get our house in order and sweep away bad ideas and regressive policies."--Jacket.

The misunderstood economy

Robert Eisner

Everybody talks about the economy; everybody has complaints or recommendations. Few know what they're talking about. So asserts Robert Eisner - one of our nation's most distinguished economists - in this authoritative analysis of the real and imagined ills of the U.S. economy. In clear, accessible language, The Misunderstood Economy confronts an array of myths surrounding economic issues. Eisner begins by challenging many of the standards traditionally used to measure economic well-being. He argues that economic prosperity should not be evaluated by miscounted federal deficits and debt, nor by the level of prices. What counts is the production of goods and services to enjoy now and add to our enjoyment in the future - and the jobs necessary for that production. Eisner posits that the federal government's accounting systems are fundamentally flawed because - violating accepted practice in the private sector and in governments around the world - U.S. federal accounts make no distinction between current outlays and investment. We also fail to relate the growing federal debt either to government or national assets, or to our growing national income. The result is a failure to understand the real impact of deficits on our current and future economic welfare. Deficits can be too small, Eisner argues, as well as too large, and one can't tell which until they are measured right. Deficits can be too small in a sluggish economy with high unemployment, when the nation lacks essential purchasing power for the products of American business. Deficit reduction then destroys jobs and discourages investment; it offers current pain for no future gain. From this perspective, Eisner addresses common misconceptions on the role of taxes (he wouldn't raise them to reduce the deficit), social security, inflation, trade, and foreign investment. He sharply challenges the ideas of many economists, bankers, and politicians that a significant level of unemployment is "natural" and necessary. He rejects the ideas of those who poor-mouth the U.S. economy - by far the strongest in the world - but notes the failings that threaten our prospects for continued leadership in our rapidly changing, technologically advancing world. Throughout his lucid analysis, Eisner takes time to provide straightforward definitions of the terms so often used and misused in the course of national discussions . He concludes that we can enjoy greater prosperity today and build a foundation for greater long-term growth by focusing on the real issues and escaping the flawed thinking that has too often in the past been allowed to distort analysis of the economy.

The portable MBA in entrepreneurship

William D. Bygrave

Sixty-million years ago dinosaurs were driven to extinction by global climatic changes, making way, in the process, for the small, more adaptable, warm-blooded mammals. Similarly, in the new economic climate of the 1980s and '90s, small business owners and entrepreneurs are quickly becoming the dominant business species. While the floundering corporate giants continue to lay off workers at a rate of 400,000 annually, small businesses create millions of new jobs each year - a trend, most experts agree, that will continue well into the 21st century. In The Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship, you'll find out how top business schools are preparing students to meet the challenges of the entrepreneurial-driven business climate of the 1990s and beyond. William Bygrave, a successful entrepreneur and Director of the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Babson College, has brought together an all-star team of thinkers and doers to offer both established and aspiring entrepreneurs this comprehensive, highly practical guide. They include professors, consultants, and entrepreneurs - most of them successful business people, in addition to being first-class academics. Over the course of fourteen chapters, these experts cover all the angles, including how to tell if you've got the "right stuff" to be a success; start-up strategies; spotting market opportunities, marketing, and advertising; getting financing and managing debt; preparing business plans; managing a growing business and strategies for growth; legal and tax issues every small business person and entrepreneur should know; protecting intellectual property; and much more. Amazingly, while The Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship brings you the collective wisdom of some of the top guns in the academic and business worlds, it requires no background or academic prerequisites. Featuring solid, substantive information written in an interesting and engaging style, this book is your golden opportunity to get a state-of-the-art education in entrepreneurship in your spare time and at a tiny fraction of the cost of an MBA program.

China's New Business Elite

Margaret M. Pearson

Economic reforms in China have led to the creation of an entirely new social class: the business elite. Entrepreneurs in the foreign and private sectors have benefited tremendously from the new economic freedoms in China, but have they pushed for political reforms as well? To explore this question, Margaret Pearson conducted extensive interviews with Chinese-born managers of foreign-sector firms and researched the activities of private-sector entrepreneurs. She concludes that, contrary to the assumptions of many Westerners, these groups are not at the forefront of democratization or the emergence of a civil society. Rather, she argues, they are at the head of a new form of state-society relations in China, a hybrid of socialist corporatism and clientelism. Ultimately, she demonstrates that this hybrid pattern, which has deep roots in Chinese history, has been shaped by the Chinese state to ensure that economic development will not lead to democratization. As private enterprises mushroom, foreign investment soars, and the standard of living continues to improve in China, all eyes are watching for changes in the political structure. The insights and studied predictions in this book will be invaluable keys to understanding the emerging dimensions of China's social and political future.

"In November 1994 the Norwegian electorate rejected membership of the European Union. Since then the country has struggled to adapt a range of policies to fit in with those of the EU. This book provides the first all-round coverage of the relationship between the EU and its oil-rich northern neighbour and sets out the options open to Norway in the future." "This book will appeal to students and researchers with an interest in European integration and Nordic studies in general."--BOOK JACKET.
