Complex Systems: Chaos and Beyond

by Kunihiko Kaneko, Ichiro Tsuda (2001)

About this book

Chaos in science has always been a fascinating realm since it challenges the usual scientific approach of reductionism. While carefully distinguishing between complexity, holism, randomness, incompleteness, nondeterminism and stochastic behaviour the authors show that, although many aspects of chaos have been phenomenologically understood, most of its defining principles are still difficult to grasp and formulate. Demonstrating that chaos escapes all traditional methods of description, the authors set out to find new methods to deal with this phenomenon and illustrate their constructive approach with many examples from physics, biology and information technology. While maintaining a high level of rigour, an overly complicated mathematical apparatus is avoided in order to make this book accessible, beyond the specialist level, to a wider interdisciplinary readership.

Waves Called Solitons

Michel Remoissenet

Written for an interdisciplinary readership of physicists, engineers, and chemists, this book is a practical guide to the fascinating world of solitons. These waves of large amplitude propagate over long distances without dispersing and therefore show one of the most striking aspects of nonlinearity. The author addresses students, practitioners, and researchers, approaching the subject from the standpoint of applications in optics, hydrodynamics, and electrical and chemical engineering. The book also encourages the readers to perform their own experiments. Since the printing of the second edition of this book, there has been a large growth in the literature on nonlinear waves and so has the wide applicability of the subject to the physical, chemical and biological sciences. Accordingly, this third edition has been thoroughly revised. Some of the topics are brought up to date with pertinent references. Furthermore, the book now includes a completely new chapter on solitary waves in diffuse systems.

Quantum Monte Carlo Methods in Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Systems

Masuo Suzuki

This volume is the proceedings of the Ninth Taniguchi Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter. It presents the basic ideas of quantum statistical Monte Carlo methods, including generalizations of the standard methods, and discusses the important problem of convergence. In addition, some promising powerful new methods are proposed, for example, a transfer-matrix method. Further contributions describe specific applications to quantum spin and fermion systems at finite temperatures, such as the treatment of randomness and frustration in a triangular antiferromagnet, the investigation of critical properties of spin chains, the study of spin glasses and the simulation of polaron and bipolaron systems. In particular, some new information is given about frustrated quantum spin systems and the dense Kondo problem.

Colloidal Dispersions Under Slit-Pore Confinement

Yan Zeng

This dissertation contributes to the understanding of fundamental issues in the highly interdisciplinary field of colloidal science. Beyond colloid science, the system also serves as a model for studying interactions in biological matter. This work quantitatively investigated the scaling laws of the characteristic lengths of the structuring of colloidal dispersions and tested the generality of these laws, thereby explaining and resolving some long-standing contradictions in the literature.

It revealed the effect of confinement on the structuring, independently of specific properties of the confining interfaces. In addition, it resolved the influence of roughness and charge of the confining interfaces on the structuring, as well as providing a method to measure the effect of surface deformability on colloidal structuring.

This book contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Mathematical Results in Quantum Mechanics held in Blossin, Germany, May 17-21, 1993. Its purpose is to draw attention to the recent developments in quantum mechanics and related mathematical problems. The book is addressed to the wide audience of mathematicians and physicists interested in contemporary quantum physics and associated mathematical problems. The reader will find sections not only on traditional subjects such as Schrödinger and Dirac operators and generalized Schrödinger generators, but also on stochastic spectral analysis, many-body problems and statistical physics, chaos, and operator theory and its applications.
