Content-based video retrieval

by Milan Petkovic, Willem Jonker (2010)

About this book

This book focuses particularly on content-based video retrieval. After addressing basic concepts and techniques in the field, Content-Based Video Retrieval: A Database Perspective concentrates on the semantic gap problem, i.e., the problem of inferring semantics from raw video data, as the main problem of content-based video retrieval. This book identifies and proposes the integrated use of three different techniques to bridge the semantic gap, namely, spatio-temporal formalization methods, hidden Markov models, and dynamic Bayesian networks. As the problem is approached from a database perspective, the emphasis evolves from a database management system into a video database management system. This system allows a user to retrieve the desired video sequence among voluminous amounts of video data in an efficient and semantically meaningful way. This book also presents a modeling framework and a prototype of a content-based video management system that integrates the three methods and provides efficient, flexible, and scalable content-based video retrieval. The proposed approach is validated in the domain of sport videos for which some experimental results are presented.

This two volume set LNCS 8055 and LNCS 8056 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications, DEXA 2013, held in Prague, Czech Republic, August 23-29, 2013. The 43 revised full papers presented together with 33 short papers, and 3 keynote talks, were carefully reviewed and selected from 174 submissions. These papers discuss a range of topics including: search queries; indexing; discovery of semantics; parallel processing; XML and RDF; enterprise models; query evaluation and optimization; semantic Web; sampling; industrial applications; communities; AI and databases; matching and searching; information extraction; queries, streams, and uncertainty, storage and compression; query processing; security; distributed data processing; metadata modeling and maintenance; pricing and recommending; and security and semantics.

Data mining

Jiawei Han, Micheline Kamber

"Here's the resource you need if you want to apply today's most powerful data mining techniques to meet real business challenges. Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques equips you with a sound understanding of data mining principles and teaches you proven methods for knowledge discovery in large corporate databases.". "Written expressly for database practitioners and professionals, this book begins with a conceptual introduction designed to get you up to speed. This is followed by a comprehensive and state-of-the-art coverage of data mining concepts and techniques. Each chapter functions as a stand alone guide to a critical topic, presenting proven algorithms and sound implementations ready to be used directly or with strategic modification against live data. Wherever possible, the authors raise and answer questions of utility, feasibility, optimization, and scalability, keeping your eye on the issues that will affect your project's results and your overall success." "Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques is the master reference that practitioners and researchers have long been seeking. It is also the obvious choice for academic and professional classrooms."--BOOK JACKET.

Database semantics

Robert Meersman, Zahir Tari, Scott Stevens

"Database Semantics: Semantic issues in Multimedia Systems reflects the state of the art of emerging research on the meaning of multimedia information, as presented during IFIP's Eighth Data Semantics Working Conference (DS-8), organized by its Working Group 2.8 on Databases, and held at Rotorua, New Zealand in January 1999. DS-8 was planned as an active forum for researchers and practitioners focusing on those issues that involve the semantics of the information represented, stored, and manipulated by multimedia systems. Depending on the topic and state of research, issues may be covered deeply theoretically or quite practically, or even both."--BOOK JACKET.

Numeric databases

Ching-chih Chen, Peter Hernon

The purpose of this book is to provide readers with the fundamentals of numeric databases and draw attention to them, their value, and utility to libraries and information centers. The public needs access to information which does not always appear in print format. Libraries and information centers must be aware of these resources, and recognize that they are essential information sources for a growing number of subjects. Subjects where the use of large sets of statistical data is becoming common are particularly important. This book is aimed at those readers wanting an introduction to many facets of the subject.
