About this book

"This book critically assess how ICTs are finding their way into the world of social movements, considering overarching issues and providing examples of cyberprotest movements from across the globe. It will be valuable reading for students and academics in politics, media and communication, public administration, sociology and ICT. It will also be of great interest to policy makers and social activists."--Jacket.

Smartphones as locative media

Jordan Frith

"Smartphone adoption has surpassed 50% of the population in more than 15 countries, and there are now more than one million mobile applications people can download to their phones. Many of these applications take advantage of smartphones as locative media, which is what allows smartphones to be located in physical space. Applications that take advantage of people's location are called location-based services, and they are the focus of this book. Smartphones as locative media raise important questions about how we understand the complicated relationship between the Internet and physical space. This book addresses these questions through an interdisciplinary theoretical framework and a detailed analysis of how various popular mobile applications including Google Maps, Facebook, Instagram, Yelp, and Foursquare use people's location to provide information about their surrounding space. The topics explored in this book are essential reading for anyone interested in how smartphones and location-based services have begun to impact the ways we navigate and engage with the physical world." --

Temps zéro

Italo Calvino

In this book, each second is an age, every cell a universe. Through a series of stories, the author illustrates the paradoxes of space and time. Estranged lovers forever travelling parallel highways, the hunter and lion trapped at each others throats and victims linked in mutual pursuit.

Knights of Sidonia

Tsutomu Nihei

"Get to know a new character who may be this futuristic series' most traditionally virtuous female. Drawing on deep wells of filial piety and perseverance, unfailingly modest, she is Tsumugi. 'I've read one other series produced by Tsutomu Nihei--Biomega-- which turned me into a major fan of his art and imagination and sensibility, but not so much of his story-telling, because I spent parts of that series mildly puzzled about what was going on (admittedly, I'm not the hardest guy in the world to puzzle when it comes to manga). With Knights of Sidonia, he's clearly trying something a bit more accessible... The art is really good, a simplified, clarified version of the style I've seen Tsutomu Nihei use elsewhere'"--Back cover.

The mathematical theory of finite element methods

Susanne C. Brenner, L. Ridgway Scott

This book develops the basic mathematical theory of the finite element method, the most widely used technique for engineering design and analysis. It formalizes basic tools that are commonly used by researchers in the field but not previously published. The book will be useful to mathematicians as well as engineers and physical scientists. It can be used for a course that provides an introduction to basic functional analysis, approximation theory, and numerical analysis, while building upon and applying basic techniques of real variable theory. The initial chapter provides an introduction to the entire subject, developed in the one-dimensional case. Four subsequent chapters develop the basic theory in the multidimensional case, and a fifth chapter presents basic applications of this theory. Subsequent chapters provide an introduction to multigrid methods and other iterative solution techniques, mixed methods with applications to elasticity and fluid flow models, variational "crimes" including nonconforming and isoparametric methods and numerical integration, error estimates in the maximum norm with applications to nonlinear problems, and Banach-space operator-interpolation techniques. Different course paths can be chosen, allowing the book to be used for courses designed for students with different interests. For example, courses can emphasize physical applications, or algorithmic efficiency and code development issues, or the more difficult convergence theorems of the subject.
