About this book

"In a speech to high school graduates in Topeka, Kansas, in May 2014, First Lady Michelle Obama told graduates, "I am so proud of all that you've accomplished ... And I cannot wait to see everything you will achieve in the years ahead." But these days most young people born between the early 1980s and the beginning of the 21st century, known as millennials, have not seen success. Achieving success will be more difficult than it was in the past. Millennials are different from the youth of prior generations of Americans. This is the first generation of young Americans that our government systematically disfavors, and the first generation of Americans whose prospects are lower than their parents. The American government is robbing millennials (some of whom cannot even vote) to pay for lavish services for their parents and grandparents. The education system has failed millennials, leaving them ill-equipped for college and struggling under mountains of debt when and if they do gradate from college. Other laws discourage young people from finding work, and in some cases make it impossible for them to gain crucial career experience. This lack of early work experience can have profound social and economic implications later in life. It is time someone told the full story of the betrayal of America's youth. America is facing a crisis. The future of America can be saved, but only if our government's betrayal of our youth comes to an end. It is a Pyrrhic war without victors, only victims. The birthright of the millennials must be restored. This book explains how"--

State out of the union

Jeff Biggers

"Days after President Obama beseeched his fellow lawmakers in the State of the Union to come together as a people, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, "and find common ground, even as we're having some very vigorous debates," the extraordinary effect of Arizona's sagebrush rebellion had already rippled across the country. In the alarming and fascinating State Out of The Union, award-winning author Jeff Biggers shows how the Arizonification of America is in full swing. More than 25 state legislatures have already introduced copycat anti-immigration bills of Arizona's controversial SB 1070. But immigration reform is just the opening salvo-in Arizona, and for the 2012 elections. With one of the most radical Tea Party factions in control of its legislature, Arizona and its growing bevy of wingnut politicians have not only dislodged Sarah Palin as one of the most popular jokes on late night TV shows, but have set in motion one of the most alarming challenges to federal authority in history. The legislature has passed several bills challenging federal authority on gun laws, Medicaid, and the rights of undocumented children to attend school or go to the emergency room. One bill debated in the state congress proposed prohibiting "courts from considering international law or legal percepts of other nations or cultures when making judicial decisions." Another bill required federal environmental inspectors to register with the sheriff whenever its representatives enter one of Arizona's fifteen counties. One Forbes reporter wrote that the bill could be summed up in three words: "Stay outta Arizona." As a precursor to the 2012 election, Arizona defiantly unveiled its vision of a Tea Party America--that may be our future"--

Who really killed Kennedy?

Jerome R. Corsi

Posits that John F. Kennedy was not killed by a lone assassin. At the height of his popularity, John F. Kennedy was gunned down in a Dallas motorcade--a tragedy widely regarded as the end of America's post-war "age of innocence." At the time, a concerted effort was made by the Warren Commission, appointed by the Lyndon Johnson White House, to officially lay the entire blame on "lone gunman" Lee Harvey Oswald. Fifty years later, recently declassified documents shed new light on what really happened. In decades of meticulous research, investigative journalist Jerome Corsi has sorted through mountains of evidence--hundreds of books, tens of thousands of documents, several films, and countless photographs. Dissecting the Warren Commission's conclusion, he carefully separates the unlikely from the real, and speculation from facts. Having personally known or met many of the key players in the assassination drama, including a former top Soviet bloc intelligence official, Corsi reveals shocking information for the first time. He sets a new standard for JFK assassination research, demanding that future researchers understand the political forces leading up to an unthinkable event that marked a profound change in America and the world.--From publisher description.

The Europeanization of European politics

Charlotte Bretherton and Michael Mannin

"This book presents a comparative perspective to the study of European politics, focusing on the unique and transformative effect of European Union on the politics of its member states - in effect, the Europeanization of European politics. For no other world region is there a similar intensity of Treaty and other obligations on a set of neighboring states, nor a comparable depth of of supranational governance. The concept of Europeanism as an evaluative theme is used to explore this unique, sui generis, region, its states, and its political transformation in the 21st century."--Publisher's website.

Democracy, sovereignty and the European Union

Michael Newman

"The Maastricht Treaty reactivated a long-term debate about the future of the European Union. Does it still make sense to talk of the 'sovereign state', or is power now moving upwards in the direction of a political union and downwards to a regional level? What are the implications of such trends for democracy? Controversy over what is happening and what should happen has engulfed the whole European Union. Yet the arguments are often conducted polemically, and both information and concepts are distorted."--BOOK JACKET. "This book counters misrepresentation by both 'Eurosceptics' and 'Euro-enthusiasts' by examining the issues involved in the sovereignty debates. Written in an accessible style, it examines key questions in democracy, drawing on both traditional concepts of political thought and empirical evidence to elucidate the current situation. It offers critical insights into the EU, and some of the arguments frequently used in its defence. But it rejects the nationalist opposition, and presents a case for a democratic EU which would be worthy of support."--BOOK JACKET. "Specialists, students and all those interested in the future of the European Union will find this a challenging critique of conventional analysis, which provides sufficient information for readers to form their own conclusions."--BOOK JACKET.
