About this book

A large Madonna for the Florentine church of Sta Maria Novella was ordered from him in 1285 and in 1308 the consummation of his career was the contract for the huge Maesta for the High Altar of the Cathedral in Siena. Most of it is w in the Cathedral Museum and there is a small panel in the National Gallery, London. In its original form the Maesta proper - the enthroned Madonna and Child surrounded by saints and angels - occupied the whole of the main panel facing the congregation. The craftsmanship, the use of gold as a decoration and a compositional feature, the use of varied and elegant outlines as a surface pattern as well as a description of form; all these elements characterize the Sienese School for nearly two centuries.

Howard Hodgkin paintings 1992-2007

with essays by Richard Morphet, Anthony Lane

"Howard Hodgkin (b. 1932) is among the most important artists working in Britain today. Nominally abstract, his paintings are, in his words, "representational pictures of emotional situations." Sumptuously illustrated, this book focuses on a selection of Hodgkin's paintings from the last fifteen years. Conceived independently, Howard Hodgkin: Paintings 1992-2007 will complement recent, retrospective exhibitions and publications, providing a critical coda to current scholarship on this artist's work. Essays by Richard Morphet and Anthony Lane bring together personal responses to Hodgkin's work from this period, with special reference to works in the exhibition at Yale and Cambridge; accounts of the development of his art in the preceding decades; observations on the artist's relationship between his personal circumstances and his art; and discussion of some of the links between Hodgkin's vision and the work of selected other artists in England, continental Europe and the United States of America."--Jacket.

Elegy landscapes

Stanley Plumly

"Following his 'obsessive, intricate, intimate, and brilliant' (Washington Post) work in Posthumous Keats and The Immortal Evening, renowned poet Stanley Plumly further explores immortality in art through the work of two impressive landscape artists: John Constable and J.M.W. Turner. How is it that this disparate pair will come to be regarded as Britain's supreme landscape painters, precursors to Impressionism and Modernism? How did each painter's life influence his work? Seeking the transcendent aesthetic awe of the sublime and reeling from personal tragedy, these talented painters portrayed the terrible beauty of the natural world from an intimate, close-up perspective. Plumly studies the paintings against the pull of the artists' lives, probing how each finds the sublime in different, though connected, worlds. At once a meditation on the difficulties in achieving truly immortal works of art and an exploration of the relationship between artist and artwork, Elegy Landscapes takes a wide-angle look at the philosophy of the sublime"--
