Enhancing U.S. leadership at the United Nations

by David Dreier and Lee H. Hamilton, co-chairs (2002)

About this book

"The United States has not been nearly as effective at the United Nations as it can or should be. To address this concern, the Council on Foreign Relations and Freedom House consponsored an Independent Task Force to assess the U.S.-UN relationship and to suggest a new strategy for improving the effectiveness and reputation of the United States at the UN." "The Task Force calls for a U.S. strategy of building a coalition of democracies at the United Nations to carry forward three aims: building further support for democratization around the world, promoting respect for human rights principles, and coming together more effectively in the war against terrorism." "In making its analysis, the Task Force identified several obstacles to U.S. effectiveness at the UN, including U.S. reluctance to support international agreements; the U.S. practice of withholding treaty-obligated dues; long gaps in the confirmation of a permanent U.S. representative to the UN; and a reluctance to engage in the outreach and lobbying at the UN for which American democracy is famous. The report also concludes that politicization in UN bodies, including the General Assembly and the Commission on Human Rights, has made the institution an inconsistent voice for democracay and human rights." "This report includes the Task Force's findings and recommendations, as well as key UN documents in the areas of democracy, human rights, and counterterrorism." --Book Jacket.

"As Madeline Albright once said, 'The United States is good. We try to do our best everywhere'. So - as the first chapter in this book asks - Why Do Terrorists Keep Picking on the United States? Some suggest it is envy or ingratitude. Maybe it is simply pure evil? Surely it can have no connection with the 40 foreign governments the US has attempted to overthrow since 1945? Or the crushing of over 30 freedom movements around the world, killing millions and destroying the hope of millions more? This well documented book, updated in response to the unfolding 'War Against Terrorism', tells a more believable story about US imperialism than you will obtain from CNN. "Rogue State" and its author came to sudden international attention when Osama Bin Laden quoted the book publicly in January 2006, propelling the book to the top of the bestseller charts in a matter of hours. This book is a revised and updated version of the edition, Bin Laden referred to in his address."--Publisher's description.

This book adds a wealth of new data on the political significance of inter-American migration, through case studies of the politics of population flows from Cuba, Central America, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. This theme has received only preliminary attention fully ten years after the Mariel boat-lift from Cuba. The contributing scholars bolster an emerging trend in the broad study of international population movements, emphasizing the effect of government policies on migration and challenging the notion that migration is a social process quite insulated from the effects of public policy.

Includes recommendations for individuals and communities"--Provided by publisher.
