Field-based coordination for pervasive multiagent systems

by Marco Mamei, Franco Zambonelli (2005)

About this book

More and more, software systems involve autonomous and distributed software components that have to execute and interact in open and dynamic environments, such as in pervasive, autonomous, and mobile applications. The requirements with respect to dynamics, openness, scalability, and decentralization call for new approaches to software design and development, capable of supporting spontaneous configuration, tolerating partial failures, or arranging adaptive reorganization of the whole system. Inspired by the behaviour of complex natural systems, scientists and engineers have started to adjust their mechanisms and techniques for self-organization and adaption to changing environments. In line with these considerations, Mamei and Zambonelli propose an interaction model inspired by the way masses and particles in our universe move and self-organize according to contextual information represented by gravitational and electromagnetic fields. The key idea is to have the components’ actions driven by computational force fields, generated by the components themselves or by some infrastructures, and propagated across the environment. Together with its supporting middleware infrastructure – available with additional information under – this model can serve as the basis for a general purpose and widely applicable approach for the design and development of adaptive distributed applications.

Artificial evolution

The Arti?cial Evolution conference was originally conceived as a forum for the French-speaking Evolutionary Computation community, but has of late been acquiring an European audience, with several papers from Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain... However, AE remains as intended a small and friendly gathering, which will continue to be held every two years. Previous AE meets were held in Toulouse, Brest, and Nˆ ?mes. This year, the hosting was done by the LIL (Laboratoire d’Informatique du Littoral) in the not-so-cold city of Dunkerque. The invited talk on “Fitness Landscapes and Evolutionary Algorithms” was delivered by Colin Reeves of Coventry University This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the conference. Twenty-seven papers were presented orally at the conference, selected from over 40 papers refereed by the program committee. After the conference, each p- sentation was reviewed and 20 papers were retained and revised for publication in this volume. The papers in this volume have been grouped into the following ?ve sections which more or less re?ect the organization of the oral presentations. 1. Invited Paper: C. Reeves brightly describes the state of the art in Fitness Landscapes.

"Socially Intelligent Agents serves as an excellent reference for a wide readership, e.g., computer scientists, roboticists, web programmers and designers, computer users, cognitive scientists, and other researchers interested in the study of how humans relate to computers and robots, and how these agents in return can relate to humans. This book is also suitable as research material in a variety of advanced level courses, including Applied Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Agents, Human-Computer Interaction, Situated and Embodied Al."--BOOK JACKET.

Millimeter and submillimeter wave spectroscopy of solids

G. Grüner

Millimeter and Submillimeter Wave Spectroscopy of Solids focuses on the experimental methods and recent experimental results which are currently employed in the millimeter wave spectral range. Time dome, Fourier transform, coherent source and resonant techniques are discussed by leading authorities in the field. The usefulness of the methods is discussed by reviewing experimental results on metals and semiconductors. Recent experiment covering modern topics such as correlation on metals, superconductors and confined quantum systems are also discussed. The volume is aimed at physicists, engineers and materials scientists interested in the dynamics of solid matter.

This edition places emphasis on patient-focused pharmaceutical care and on the pharmacist as a therapeutic consultant, rather than a chemist. A new disease state management section explains appropriate therapeutic options for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and men's and women's health problems.
