Desert

[written and edited by Fleur Star

Journey through Africa, America, and Australia and witness the amazing survival techniques of camels, kangaroos, snakes, scorpions, and other animals in hot deserts. Compare them to the guanacos, flamingos, and even penguins of the coastal and cold deserts such as the Atacama, Namib, Gobi, and Patagonia. We also tackle the tricky question of Antarctica – is this the biggest desert in the world? We pop in on the people of the desert: where and how do Bedouins, Tuaregs, Aborigines, and Rajasthanis live? What are their homes like, their clothes, their food? How is it different for the Mongolians in the Gobi? No desert book would be complete without the plant symbol of thedesert: the cactus. We show how these and other hardy plants survive inthe dry land. The book ends with a look to the future: desertification. The spreading desert is a major concern for the environment, but what are the causes (global warming, misuse of land), what does it mean for us (a quarter of land on Earth and around 250 million people are affected by desertification), and how can we stop it? Desert presents all the facts in the clear, colourful way people trust the "Eye Wonder" series to deliver. Stunning photography brings the subject alive for the reader, and accessible text (complete with glossary) give a level of understanding ideal for the 5-10 age-group. The series is perfect for school projects and home reading.

Gröbner Deformations of Hypergeometric Differential Equations

Mutsumi Saito, Bernd Sturmfels, Nobuki Takayama

In recent years, new algorithms for dealing with rings of differential operators have been discovered and implemented. A main tool is the theory of Gröbner bases, which is reexamined here from the point of view of geometric deformations. Perturbation techniques have a long tradition in analysis; Gröbner deformations of left ideals in the Weyl algebra are the algebraic analogue to classical perturbation techniques. The algorithmic methods introduced in this book are particularly useful for studying the systems of multidimensional hypergeometric partial differentiel equations introduced by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. The Gröbner deformation of these GKZ hypergeometric systems reduces problems concerning hypergeometric functions to questions about commutative monomial ideals, and thus leads to an unexpected interplay between analysis and combinatorics. This book contains a number of original research results on holonomic systems and hypergeometric functions, and it raises many open problems for future research in this rapidly growing area of computational mathematics '

Boundary-Layer Separation

Frank T. Smith, Susan N. Brown

This book aims to present modern thinking and developments in the theory, computation and experimental measurement of boundary layers, with particular emphasis on separation. Boundary-layer separation is a common occurrence in external and internal fluid flows at medium to high Reynolds numbers, and the understanding of the phenomenon has increased greatly in recent years. This book, bringing together contributions from theoreticians, computationalists and experimentalists, is an attempt to reflect much of the recent progress as well as point out future goals and provide ideas and stimulation. The work covers the effects of incompressibility and compressibility, steadiness and unsteadiness, two - and three - dimensionality, small - and large - scale behaviour, and various theories, computational methods and experimental findings, for laminar, transitional and turbulent separating flows.

Cover of Floral diagrams

Floral diagrams

Louis P. Ronse De Craene

"Floral morphology remains the cornerstone for plant identification and studies of plant evolution. This guide gives a global overview of the floral diversity of the angiosperms through the use of detailed floral diagrams. These schematic diagrams replace long descriptions or complicated drawings as a tool for understanding floral structure and evolution. They show important features of flowers, such as the relative positions of the different organs, their fusion, symmetry, and structural details. The relevance of the diagrams is discussed, and pertinent evolutionary trends are illustrated. The range of plant species represented reflects the most recent classification of flowering plants based mainly on molecular data, which is expected to remain stable in the future. This book is invaluable for researchers and students working on plant structure, development and systematics, as well as being an important resource for plant ecologists, evolutionary botanists and horticulturists." --NHBS Environment Bookstore.
