Functional analysis

by P.K. Jain, O.P. Ahuja, Khalil Ahmad (1995)

About this book

The book is intended to serve as a textbook for an introductory course in functional analysis for the senior undergraduate and graduate students. It can also be useful for the senior students of applied mathematics, statistics, operations research, engineering and theoretical physics. The text starts with a chapter on Preliminaries discussing basic concepts and results which would be taken for granted later in the book. This is followed by chapters on Normed and Banach Spaces, Bounded Linear Operators, Bounded Linear Functionals, The Concept and Specific Geometry of Hilbert Spaces, Functionals and Operators on Hilbert Spaces and Introduction to Spectral Theory. An appendix have been given on Schauder Bases. The salient features of the book are presentation of the subject in a natural way, description of the concepts with justification, clear and precise exposition avoiding pendantry, various examples and counter examples, and graded problems throughout each chapter. Notes and remarks within the text enhances the utility of the book for the students.

The uncertainty principle in harmonic analysis

Victor Havin, Burglind Jöricke

This Ergebnisse volume is devoted to the Uncertainty Principle (UP) and it contains a collection of essays dealing with the various manifestations of this phenomenon. The authors describe different approaches to the subject, using both "real" and "complex" techniques and succeed to show the influence of the UP in some areas outside Fourier Analysis. The book is essentially self-contained and thus accessible to any graduate student acquainted with the fundamentals of Fourier, Complex and Functional Analysis. As there is no other book approaching the subject of UP in the way Havin and Joericke do in this work, this book will certainly be a welcome addition to the bookshelves of many researchers working in this field.

An Introduction to Black Holes, Information and the String Theory Revolution

Leonard Susskind, James Lindesay

"Over the last decade the physics of black holes has been revolutionized by developments that grew out of Jacob Bekenstein's realization that black holes have entropy. This revolution has culminated in a remarkable principle called "the holographic principle," which is now a major focus of attention in gravitational research, quantum field theory and elementary particle physics. Leonard Susskind, one of the co-inventors of the holographic principle as well as one of the founders of string theory, develops and explains these concepts."--BOOK JACKET.

The mathematical theory of finite element methods

Susanne C. Brenner, L. Ridgway Scott

This book develops the basic mathematical theory of the finite element method, the most widely used technique for engineering design and analysis. It formalizes basic tools that are commonly used by researchers in the field but not previously published. The book will be useful to mathematicians as well as engineers and physical scientists. It can be used for a course that provides an introduction to basic functional analysis, approximation theory, and numerical analysis, while building upon and applying basic techniques of real variable theory. The initial chapter provides an introduction to the entire subject, developed in the one-dimensional case. Four subsequent chapters develop the basic theory in the multidimensional case, and a fifth chapter presents basic applications of this theory. Subsequent chapters provide an introduction to multigrid methods and other iterative solution techniques, mixed methods with applications to elasticity and fluid flow models, variational "crimes" including nonconforming and isoparametric methods and numerical integration, error estimates in the maximum norm with applications to nonlinear problems, and Banach-space operator-interpolation techniques. Different course paths can be chosen, allowing the book to be used for courses designed for students with different interests. For example, courses can emphasize physical applications, or algorithmic efficiency and code development issues, or the more difficult convergence theorems of the subject.

Real methods in complex and CR geometry

M. Abate ... [et al

The geometry of real submanifolds in complex manifolds and the analysis of their mappings belong to the most advanced streams of contemporary Mathematics. In this area converge the techniques of various and sophisticated mathematical fields such as P.D.E.'s, boundary value problems, induced equations, analytic discs in symplectic spaces, complex dynamics. For the variety of themes and the surprisingly good interplaying of different research tools, these problems attracted the attention of some among the best mathematicians of these latest two decades. They also entered as a refined content of an advanced education. In this sense the five lectures of this volume provide an excellent cultural background while giving very deep insights of current research activity.
