Generating evidence for genomic diagnostic test development

by Theresa Wizemann and Adam C. Berger, rapporteurs (2011)

About this book

"Ten years after the sequencing of the human genome, scientists have developed genetic tests that can predict a person's response to certain drugs, estimate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, and make other predictions based on known links between genes and diseases. However, genetic tests have yet to become a routine part of medical care, in part because there is not enough evidence to show they help improve patients' health. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) held a workshop to explore how researchers can gather better evidence more efficiently on the clinical utility of genetic tests. Generating Evidence for Genomic Diagnostic Test Development compares the evidence that is required for decisions regarding clearance, use, and reimbursement, to the evidence that is currently generated. The report also addresses innovative and efficient ways to generate high-quality evidence, as well as barriers to generating this evidence. Generating Evidence for Genomic Diagnostic Test Development contains information that will be of great value to regulators and policymakers, payers, health-care providers, researchers, funders, and evidence-based review groups."--Publisher's description.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

Russell A. Barkley

Updating and expanding Russell Barkley's Handbook, this new second edition incorporates the latest findings on the nature, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As in the previous edition, Dr. Barkley includes contributions from other leading scientist-practitioners, who report on their respective areas of expertise. Readers will find current, practical information on nearly every aspect of the disorder. In-depth assessment and treatment guidelines are supported by updated documentation on outcomes, and three new chapters focus specifically on adults. - Jacket.

Constitutional pluralism in the European Union and beyond

Matej Avbelj and Jan Komárek

Constitutional pluralism has become immensely popular among scholars who study European integration and issues of global governance. Some of them believe that constitutionalism, traditionally thought to be bound to a nation state, can emerge beyond state borders - most importantly in the process of European integration, but also beyond that, for example, in international regulatory regimes such as the WTO, or international systems of fundamental rights protection, such as the European Convention. At the same time, the idea of constitutional pluralism has not gone unchallenged. Some have questioned its compatibility with the very nature of law and the values which law brings to constitutionalism. The critiques have come from both sides: from those who believe in the 'traditional' European constitutionalism based on a hierarchically superior authority of the European Union as well as from scholars focusing on constitutions of particular states. The book collects contributions taking opposing perspectives on constitutional pluralism - some defending and promoting the concept of constitutional pluralism, some criticising and opposing it. While some authors can be called 'the founding fathers of constitutional pluralism', others are young academics who have recently entered the field. Together they offer fresh perspectives on both theoretical and practical aspects of constitutional pluralism, enriching our existing understanding of the concept in current scholarship

The Biology and prevention of aerodigestive tract cancers

Guy R. Newell and Waun Ki Hong

New approaches to basic research, and the success of various chemotherapies for cancer of the aerodigestive tract, are among the topics of the 20 papers, from a February 1991 conference in Houston. Risk factors such as alcohol, smokeless tobacco, and asbestos, are considered, as are possible methods of prevention suggested by current chemotherapy, and epidemiological studies of vitamin A intake.
