Globalization

by Jürgen Osterhammel, Niels P. Peterson (2005)

About this book

"Arguing that the world did not turn "global" overnight, the book traces the emergence of globalization over the past seven or eight centuries. In fact, the authors write, the phenomenon can be traced back to early modern large-scale trading, for example, the silk trade between China and the Mediterranean region, the shipping routes between the Arabian Peninsula and India, and the more frequently traveled caravan routes of the Near East and North Africa - all conduits for people, goods, coins, artwork, and ideas." "Osterhammel and Petersson argue that the period from 1750 to 1880 - an era characterized by the development of free trade and the long-distance impact of the industrial revolution - represented an important phase in the globalization phenomenon." "This book will appeal to historians, economists, and anyone in the social sciences who is interested in the historical emergence of globalization."--Jacket.

News over the wires

Menahem Blondheim

"News over the Wires tells the story of the development of the news wire service as a business operation strategically positioned between the telegraph industry and the press." "This unique history of telegraphic news gathering and news flow evaluates the effect of the innovative technology on the evolution of the concept of news and journalistic practices. It also addresses problems of technological innovation and diffusion. Menahem Blondheim's main concern, however, is the development of oligopoly in business and the control revolution in American society. He traces the discovery of timely news as a commodity, presenting a lively and detailed account of the emergence of the New York Associated Press (AP) as the first private sector national monopoly in the United States and Western Union as the first industrial one." "The book assembles, in a narrative parade of compelling personalities and colorful episodes, a wide-ranging body of primary sources, many of them previously untapped. It reconstructs the career of AP's maverick manager, Daniel H. Craig, and highlights his achievements as one of the most creative and effective, if least appreciated, of America's great system builders." "The Associated Press and Western Union provide a novel perspective on processes of modernization and national integration in America. News over the Wires demonstrates the significance of the monopolistic structure of the news business and its important impact on economic development, on the political process, and on social integration in general."--BOOK JACKET.

Slovakia

Karen Henderson

"This book outlines the history of Slovakia over the last hundred years, and explains the importance of Hungarian legacies, as well as its development in a common state with the Czechs. Examining Slovakia's political development since independence in 1993, it traces the elements of democratic stability that were a backdrop to the more dramatic and turbulent events of the 1990s. Consideration is also given to independent Slovakia's international relations, following its path to Euro-Atlantic integration amidst the diversions of squabbling with its neighbours. Finally, Slovakia's economic progress is summarised: both the underlying positive trends as well as the more sensational aberrations in its rapid construction of a functioning market economy."--Jacket.

Toward a Latina feminism of the Americas

Anna Marie Sandoval

"Weaving strands of Chicana and Mexicana subjectivities, Toward a Latina Feminism of the Americas explores political and theoretical agendas, particularly those that undermine the patriarchy, across a diverse range of Latina authors." "Anna Sandoval considers resistance to traditional cultural symbols and contemporary efforts to counteract negative representations of womanhood in literature and society." "Offering a new perspective on the oppositional nature of Latina writers, Sandoval emphasizes the ways in which national literatures have privileged male authors, whose viewpoints are generally distinct from that of women - a point of departure rarely acknowledged in postcolonial theory. Applying her observations to the disciplinary, historical, and spatial facets of literary production, Sandoval interrogates the boundaries of the Latina experience. This is a concise yet ambitious comparative approach to the historical and cultural connections (as well as disparities) found in Chicana and Mexicana literature."--Back cover.
