About this book

One of the foremost authorities on Gone With the Wind, Richard Harwell, has gathered into one collection the most significant writings on the book, the film, and author Margaret Mitchell. Harwell brings special depth and understanding to these writings because of his personal acquaintance with Mitchell and his long-time study of GWTW phenomena. The late Richard Harwell was acknowledged as an expert on Gone With the Wind and related writings. He built one of the world's largest collections of GWTW volumes and memorabilia. Harwell wrote many books and edited many others, including Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind" Letters: 1936-1949 and Gone With the Wind: The Screenplay. At the time of his retirement he was curator of rare books and manuscripts at the University of Georgia Library. --Publisher description.

Helen Winter Stauffer

As a historian and as a novelist Mari Sandoz (1896{u2013}1966) stands in the front rank of western writers: in the words of John K. Hutchens, "no one in our time wrote better than the late Mari Sandoz did, or with more authority and grace, about as many aspects of the old West." This first full-length biography is particularly concerned to show the relationship between Sandoz's life and experiences and her writing. Drawing heavily on materials in the Mari Sandoz Collection at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln{u2014}correspondence to and from Sandoz, her research notes, and manuscripts{u2014}and on interviews with dozens of Sandoz's friends and acquaintances, the author not only establishes the facts of Sandoz's life but confirms her standing as a writer and historian.

Richard Elman

"These are Richard Elman's candid snapshots in prose of the various, mostly literary celebrities he encountered during his four decades as a working writer and journalist - among them Isaac Bashevis Singer, Tillie Olsen, Bernard Malamud, Faye Dunaway, Hunter S. Thompson, and other important artists and writers who were Elman's teachers and, occasionally, adversaries."--BOOK JACKET.

Janis P. Stout

"Previous biographies of Willa Cather have either recycled the traditional view of a writer detached from social issues whose work supported a wholesome view of a vanished America, or they have focused solely on revelations about her private life. Challenging these narrow interpretations, Janis P. Stout presents a Cather whose life and quietly modernist work fully reflected the artistic and cultural tensions of her day.". "The Cather that emerges from Stout's treatment is a modernist conservative in the mold of T.S. Eliot, though more responsive to her time and simultaneously less assured in her pronouncements. Cather's sexuality, too, is more complicated in Stout's version than previous biographers have allowed."--BOOK JACKET.
