Growth theories in light of the East Asian experience

by Takatoshi Ito and Anne O. Krueger (1995)

About this book

The contributors to this volume analyze the growth experiences of Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan in light of the recently developed endogenous growth theory to provide an understanding of the economic boom in East Asia. The theory explored in this volume attributes the phenomenal economic success of these countries to, among other factors, the role of an outward orientation - a focus on exporting rather than on protecting home markets. In addition, the importance of exchange rate behavior, of the supportive role of government policy, and of the accumulation and promotion of physical and human capital are explored in detail. This collection also makes significant contributions to recent work examining the extent to which growth in each country became self-sustaining once it began. This fourth volume in the NBER-East Asia Seminar on Economics series demonstrates the relevance of endogenous growth theory for studying this important region and will be invaluable for economists and for those interested in East Asian affairs.

[4] of cover.

The North-East region of India is known for its ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious and physiographical diversity. Due to special constitutional arrangements, historical background and geographical location, a specific economic policy framework has been in operation for the region, which this book has questioned. It proposes a new policy framework based on the market approach. In contrast to the popular perceptions, the book also shows that financially the region is not a neglected region. The book has recommended that the region will have to focus on integrating itself with the rest of the country and the world. It has to build hard and soft infrastructure and revitalise its agriculture. Above all, North-East has to become investor friendly, and stand on its own feet without excessive dependence on the Central government. Private investment is a critical component for any new development strategy, for which the book has identified major areas for policy action. These include land and labour policies, infrastructure development and improvement in the law and order situation. To link the region with dynamic East Asia, the book has argued for declaring certain areas as free trade areas as well as developing an aggressive strategy for a growth quadrangle involving the North-East of India, Myanmar, Southwest China, Northern Thailand and Bangladesh.

<">The author argues in this text that the much-vaunted reform and liberalisation of Egypt's economy has been partial and selective, far from beneficial to all Egyptians. While the encouragement of the private sector has indeed benefited some, it has failed to improve the standard of living of others, in particular the lower middle classes and a large part of the landless rural population. Most importantly, economic reform and liberalisation have failed to produce a greater degree of political democracy: notions of political accountability, clean elections, a genuinely free press, the containment of police powers have turned out to be a great delusion which masks restrictions on political participation and civil liberties.<">--Bloomsbury Publishing.
