Horace 2000

by Niall Rudd (1993)

About this book

Quintus Horatius Flaccus (Horace) died on 27 November, 8 B.C. This volume provides a fitting tribute to one who was both Rome's greatest lyric poet and its most engaging moralist. Horace 2000: A Celebration contains chapters from seven established scholars, each representing a major aspect of Horace's work. Because of their different backgrounds - in politics, literary criticism, and cultural history - the writers adopt different approaches to his poetry. They occasionally disagree, but they all have something thought-provoking and significant to say. The volume also includes a Latin poem in praise of Horace.

Understanding Richard Powers

Joseph Dewey

"Understanding Richard Powers presents an introduction to one of the most important and admired writers to emerge in the post-Pynchon era of American literature. Joseph Dewey guides readers through Powers's combination of lexical virtuosity and structural daring - typical of the postmodernists - and the novelist's concern with the profound and humane dilemmas surrounding love and death characteristic of the late-twentieth-century realists. Dewey contends that while Powers's novels investigate the most pressing issues of the new millennium, the novelist is most deeply interested in the same thematic argument that consumed Ralph Waldo Emerson and Emily Dickinson - the problem of the self, the deep and unshakable loneliness that has always been at the heart of the American literary imagination."--BOOK JACKET.

Kathleen M. Glenn and Janet Pérez

"Cristina Fernandez Cubas is, without question, one of the most important of the Spanish writers who have begun to publish since the end of the Franco dictatorship. Credited with playing a major role in the renaissance of the short story in Spain, she has won national and international acclaim for her fiction. Works by her have been translated into eight languages and have become a staple of university courses on contemporary Peninsular literature. Fernandez Cubas has created a remarkably coherent narrative world, nourished by a core of fundamental concerns. The eleven essays of Mapping the Fiction of Cristina Fernandez Cubas examine the intellectual preoccupations, narrative strategies, and rhetorical devices that distinguish the four volumes of short stories, two novels, the play, and the book of memoirs that she has published to date."--Jacket.

Dickens redressed

Alexander Welsh

"Welsh closely examines the two novels Dickens wrote after David Copperfield and reassesses the importance of this crucial stage of Dickens's career.". "In spite of the famous double narrative of Bleak House, says Welsh, the various actions and roles of the characters answer the needs of the protagonist much as they do in David Copperfield. Dickens redresses himself as the female narrator Esther Summerson and at the same time redirects his artistic energy in forms less explicitly personal. When he wrote Hard Times - which can be considered an epilogue to the much longer Bleak House - Dickens was able to conceive a plot neither centered around a hero nor fueled by the kind of wish fulfillment that structure had implied. Welsh's engaging discussion and original insights into two of Dickens's most successful novels will enhance the enthusiast's pleasure in reading these works and inspire longtime students of the novelist to think about Dickens's extraordinary accomplishments in new ways."--BOOK JACKET.
