Human heart, cosmic heart

by Thomas Cowan, MD (2016)

About this book

"Thomas Cowan was a 20-year-old Duke gradbright, skeptical, and already disillusioned with industrial capitalism when he joined the Peace Corps in the mid-1970s for a two-year tour in Swaziland. There, he encountered the work of Rudolf Steiner and Weston A. Price, two men whose ideas would fascinate and challenge him for decades to come. Both drawn to the art of healing and repelled by the way medicine was and continues to be practiced in the United States, Cowan returned from Swaziland, went to medical school, and established a practice in New Hampshire and, later, San Francisco. For years, as he raised his three children, suffered the setback of divorce, and struggled with a heart condition, he remained intrigued by the work of Price and Steiner and, in particular, with Steiner's provocative claim that the heart is not a pump. Determined to practice medicine in a way that promoted healing rather than compounded ailments, Cowan dedicated himself to understanding whether Steiner's claim could possibly be true. And if Steiner was correct, what, then, is the heart? What is its true role in the human body? In this deeply personal, rigorous, and riveting account, Dr. Cowan offers up a daring claim: Not only was Steiner correct that the heart is not a pump, but our understanding of heart disease with its origins in the blood vessels is completely wrong. And this gross misunderstanding, with its attendant medications and risky surgeries, is the reason heart disease remains the most common cause of death worldwide. In Human Heart, Cosmic Heart, Dr. Thomas Cowan presents a new way of understanding the body's most central organ. He offers a new look at what it means to be human and how we can best care for ourselves and one another."--Publisher's description.

Jacalyn Duffin

"In Lovers and Livers, Jacalyn Duffin introduces philosophical theories of disease and delves into the history of two distinct afflictions - one old, one new - that serve as examples to show how applying theory can uncover surprising aspects of the medical past and present. Written with humour and compassion, and using examples from Duffin's own clinical experience, Lovers and Livers is based on a series of public lectures incorporating audience participation along with a wide variety of sources including art, literature, medical journals, and newspapers."--Jacket.

Essentials of epidemiology in public health

Ann Aschengrau and George R. Seage III

" Successfully tested in the authors' courses at Boston University and Harvard University, Essentials of Epidemiology in Public Health, Fourth Edition combines theory and practice in presenting traditional and new epidemiologic concepts. Broad in scope, the text opens with five chapters covering the basic epidemiologic concepts and data sources. A major emphasis is placed on study design, with separate chapters devoted to each of the three main analytic designs: experimental, cohort, and case-control studies. Full chapters on bias, confounding, and random error, including the role of statistics in epidemiology, ensure that students are well-equipped with the necessary information to interpret the results of epidemiologic studies. An entire chapter is also devoted to the concept of effect measure modification, an often-neglected topic in introductory textbooks. Up-to-date examples from the epidemiologic literature on diseases of public health importance are provided throughout the book. The Fourth Edition retains its familiar 17-chapter structure but adds some important updates: Updated statistics and data throughout. Descriptions of recent infectious disease outbreaks such as Ebola and Zika in the chapter on Descriptive Epidemiology. More information on investigating infectious disease outbreaks. Examples used to illustrate epidemiological principles have been updated and add greater emphasis on social factors that influence health. Straightforward descriptions of the latest epidemiologic methods including mediation analysis, agent-based modelling, and the use of directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) to assess confounding. New figures and graphs to llustrate epidemiologic principles. More information and links to on-line resources in the chapter on Sources of Public Health Data. More subheadings and improved readability. Five to ten new questions in each set of chapter questions, many of which involve critical thinking and/or calculations to help students achieve a greater depth of understanding. Enhanced and updated instructor support materials "-- "Essentials of Epidemiology in Public Health, Fourth Edition combines theory and practice in presenting traditional and new epidemiologic concepts.
