Indian philosophers and postmodern thinkers

by Carl Olson (2002)

About this book

"This study is a welcome addition to the discipline of comparative philosophy. In a unique scholarly undertaking, classical as well as contemporary Indian philosophies and their authors engage in a hermeneutical dialogue with western postmodernism." "The book takes as its central theme the cornerstone of postmodern thought: its attack on rationality and representational modes of thinking, and its radical questioning of the place of reason in philosophy. The theme is informed and developed through a cross-cultural exchange on a number of subjects. These range from desire, suffering, abjection, and death to the nature of being and the self, and the nature of language and writing. Thus, on the subject of desire for example, the Upanisads and Nikaya Buddhism come into contact with Deleuze and Guattari, while the discussion of language and writing sets Derrida against early Buddhism and Abhinavagupta." "Carl Olson brings a variety of thinkers and divergent traditions of thought into a debate which serves to remind us that classical Indian philosophy is not a dead cultural artifact, but has enduring intellectual value. A significant contribution to the field of comparative philosophy in India and abroad, this book will be read with great interest by students and scholars of philosophy, as well as the general reader interested in Indian and Western thought."--BOOK JACKET.

Most of the book is viewable on Google Books. Quotes from distinguished authors about it are posted on the Scribd.com website under the free draft intro chapters from my forthcoming book "The Brainstem Brainwaves of Atman-Brahman". O/OM was originally intended as a 'cosmology' written in verse describing the Individual's relation to his greater 'wholes' right up to the level of the cosmos. Whilst writing explanatory essays for the poetry, I identified the physical correlate of the Divine Light of Pure Consciousness (a.k.a. Atman, Cit, Godhead, Buddha Nature, Christ, Light of Cosmic Wisdom (Sophia) Nous, Al Haqq etc.) with a brain process known to all Medics - the brainwaves from the brainstem Reticular Formation known as the Reticular Activating System. I then went on to show how the whole of Western Physicalist Science is a set of limited abstractions describing regular spatiotemporal phenomena. The Bigger, Deeper Transcendentalist core picture of Indian Yogic Mysticism based on the Primacy of Consciousness swallows up the Western picture and can also account for Consciousness, Creativity, Inspiration, and the paranormal psychic phenomena and unexplained paradoxes of Quantum Physics which transcend the limitations of Physicalist Ontology.

"Unique in its collation of major theorists rarely considered together, Critical Environments incorporates detailed discussions of the work of Richard Rorty, Walter Benn Michaels, Stanley Cavell, Humberto Maturana, Francisco Varela, Niklas Luhmann, Donna Haraway, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Fredric Jameson, and others, and ranges across fields from feminist philosophy of science to the theory of ideology. Offering American readers a comprehensive introduction to systems theory and responding to the widespread charge of relativism leveled against it, Wolfe's work will enhance and inspire new kinds of critical thought."--BOOK JACKET.

Arguing for a new direction in postmodern theological thinking, away from the liberalism and nihilism of those who name themselves postmodern theologians, this book collects together for the first time important examples of the work of continental critical theorists relevant to the study of theology or religious studies. Each essay or excerpt is selected, edited and introduced by a leading exponent of that person's work, an exponent who is also a leading figure in the contemporary theological debate.
