"Education Law provides a comprehensive survey of the legal problems and issues that confront school administrators and policy makers. The greater the likelihood of litigation or error in a particular area of professional practice, the more extensive the discussion. The book is organized in accordance with the authors' belief that students need to read cases to understand the subtlety and richness of the law - but that for legal neophytes, cases without discussion and interpretation are often difficult to comprehend. Thus the text both explains the important concepts of principles of education law and presents court decisions to illuminate them. By employing this structure, the book combines the strengths of the traditional casebook and those of the legal treatise. It also discusses the implications of the law for educational policy and practice."--Jacket.

Chinese firms between hierarchy and market

This book explores the enterprise reform in China in general, and the Contract Management Responsibility System (CMRS) in particular. The latter is an institutional arrangement to deal with the relation between the government and the state-owned enterprise which has always been at the centre of the enterprise reform. This book is based on four in-depth case-studies and reveals the interaction taking place between the government and enterprise under the system. The research shows that to establish a market-type relation between the government and enterprise is a complicated and dynamic process. It involves understanding two different economic mechanisms, market and hierarchy, and the interactions taken by two parties. Drawing on empirical work, the CMRS is examined from an institutional perspective and provides a holistic view of the changes in Chinese enterprises.

Finance capitalism and Germany's rise to industrial power

Caroline Fohlin

"Based on a wide array of new data collected by the author, the book uses clear, theoretically motivated economic analysis to explain the structure, performance, and influence of universal banks and securities markets on firms during industrialization. The German universal banks played a significant but not overwhelming role in the ownership and control of corporate firms. Banks gained access to boards via a confluence of their underwriting and brokerage activities, the legal phenomena of bearer shares and deposited voting rights, and the flourishing securities markets of the turn of the twentieth century. In general, bank relationships had little impact on firm performance; stock market listings or ownership structure was more important. The findings show that securities markets can thrive within a civil-law universal-bank system and suggest that financial system complexity can favor rapid industrial expansion."--Jacket.
