Intersections without Traffic Signals

by Werner Brilon (1988)

About this book

This book deals with unsignalized intersections in road networks. It focuses both on mathematical procedures for calculating the capacity and the quality of traffic flow and on the conversion of the theories into practicable calculation methods. The state of the art and future developments from 8 countries (Australia, Czechoslovakia, F.R. of Germany, France, Poland, Sweden, U.K. and U.S.A.) are presented. Special emphasis is placed on methods of computer simulation. The reader will learn about the present state of international practice, about practical experience with approaches in different countries, and about the most recent scientific findings in the area of unsignalized intersections. Researchers will see here the trends of future research. Aspects of traffic safety are also dealt with. The traffic engineer primarily interested in applicable solutions is provided with practicable calculation methods, above all from the field of simulation techniques, and will be able to see which has the most promising future.

Direct Digital Control for Building HVAC Systems

Michael J. Coffin

Since the publication of the first edition in 1992, the HVAC industry has gone through enormous changes. As simple digital systems have given way to more complex systems, demand for information on how these systems operate, how they are best applied and how they communicate with other building control systems has grown rapidly. Direct Digital Control for Building Systems, Second Edition is thoroughly updated and expanded to include coverage of the architecture of modern digital control systems, distributed intelligence networked systems, communication protocols, the technologies and issues concerning interoperability, the latest application strategies, and defensive techniques for designing and specifying control systems. Numerous illustrations throughout help keep the subject highly accessible, and hardware, software, and systems applications are described in the most universal terms possible. This thoroughly revised second edition also contains a full section on BACnet® standard and Echelon's LonWorks® technology; their meaning, applications, and future implications. An up-to-date appendix is provided. Insights on emerging technologies in intelligent control systems and what the future holds for this dynamic field is covered throughout.

Micro Total Analysis Systems '98

D. Jed Harrison, Albert Berg

Micro-TAS '98 is the third of a series of symposia initiated by MBSA (University of Twente) in 1994, on the subject of miniaturizing, and integrating within a monolithic structure, the chemical, biochemical and biological procedures commonly used for analysis and synthesis. The primary tool used to develop micro-total analysis systems (mu- TAS) has been micro-photolithographic patterning and micromachining. These powerful tools of Micro System Technology (MST or MEMS) have been applied in highly imaginative ways to develop microchip chemical arrays, fully integrated pump and fluid manifolds, and electrokinetically driven micro-channel systems to be used for genetic analysis, clinical diagnostics and environmental monitoring, and to integrate reactions as diverse as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the large volume, partial oxidation of ammonia. This text illustrates the rapid expansion of the field, the extensive industrial involvement, the increasing number of participating researchers, the expanding range of concepts and applications that utilize MST and microfluidic devices, and new MST-compatible plastic micro-machining to meet the needs of the life science community. This volume contains the proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Micro-Total Analysis Systems, mu-TAS '98, held on October 13-16 in Banff, Alberta, Canada. State-of-the-art invited and contributed papers presented by the world's leading mu- TAS research groups provide a highly informative picture of the growth since 1994 and of the promising future of this exciting and rapidly growing field.

An early encounter with tomorrow

Arnold Lewis

Chicago in the late nineteenth century was the wonder city of the Western world, its famous Loop the laboratory in which to study innovative commercial architecture. There, Old World assumptions were overthrown by New World realities, as the past was discounted, the present glorified, and the future eagerly anticipated. Visiting Europeans saw the Loop as an urban nucleus built by contemporary realists devoted to the pursuit of profits and a new, functional aesthetic. This futuristic city stunned them, and its crass mercantile class further appalled them: the three-minute lunch, the lightning-fast contract negotiations, the dead-run pace. Visitors also saw and admired what natives took for granted: Chicago's version of the present looked like the future. They critiqued it extensively in publications in France, Germany, and Great Britain, seeking to understand the causes linking the cloud-scraping office buildings of the Loop, the surrounding bucolic neighborhoods, and the expansive classicism of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago's Jackson Park and their implications for European culture. An Early Encounter with Tomorrow is the first book-length study of European criticism of 1890s Chicago. Arnold Lewis spent over twenty years researching in libraries abroad and in the U.S. to bring us this comprehensive and unique work. It is extravagantly illustrated with over seventy photographs, drawings, paintings, and contemporary cartoons. An exhaustive bibliography, arranged by country, is appended.
