Knowing our neighbour

by Albert Sundararaj Walters (2007)

About this book

In a world where religion is either frozen cold or exploding into flames, Christians and Muslims of good will must be ready to stand side by side. But mutual recognition must be hard-headed and sober, based on respect that grows out of firm understanding of the other's otherness: hence the need for this book. Here, Albert Walters takes Christians through fourteen centuries of Islamic history, the fundamentals of Muslim belief and practice, and the vivid diversity that makes up the Islamic world. He opens windows to show significant differences between Islam and Christianity, and helps the interested reader to make the first step of understanding and appreciation. Building on this, he deftly examines the history of Islam in his country Malaysia, and then discusses the difficulties between Christians and Muslim with realism and due concern for all the misapprehensions and misgivings that haunt moves to come closer together. At the end, he provides hints of how closeness can be attempted through systematic cooperation and the pre-requirement of respect and esteem for what is different. This book deserves to be read carefully by Christians who are concerned about impaired interfaith relationships, and to be studied by those who try to see God in the other, and also by those who do not. "The year 2009 is the Anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th publication of his book on The Origin of Species. The ideas which Darwin stimulated lie at the heart of our understanding of the natural world. They offer and elegant scientific account which elicits a positive response from and gives much to theology. Yet in recent years the Intelligent Design movement amongst creationists in the United States in opposition, not only to Darwinism, but also and consistently, to contemporary Western values and to mainstream liberal theology. It is now infiltrating the United Kingdom. In this book a group of scientists and theologians unite to honour Charles Darwin, expressing their common conviction that Darwinian evolution marks a very great advance in human understanding of the world and that Intelligent Design is an unproductive dead end. Intelligent Faith will be of interest not only to thinking people with an interest in theology and science but also to sixth formers, school discussion groups and university societies."--Page 4 of cover.

Virtually every other religious book portrays the act of believing-the decision a believer makes to accept that his or her own religion's particular assumptions and explanations are true-as if it is a good thing. Frankly, I think believing is dangerous. ... The thrust of my argument is simple: All of us think that our religion is "good" and that those in apparent (and often politically motivated) opposition to it are "bad." But the real truth is that all of our religions are equally guilty of being used to promote violence, and-thanks to centuries of political manipulation that have distorted the way we read our holy books-all of us are equally guilty of not following what our religions really say. ... The later chapters of this book explore belief and human nature in a new light to explain how Freud's theories of the subconscious and quantum physics' model of the subatomic universe offer some of the best proof we have that God exists; show us a way to restore religion to its rightful role in our lives and our world; and conclude that we're all a lot closer to where we should be than we think.

One of a number of "9/11" volumes that appeared last year, Rollin Armour's book has been nearly a decade in the making. He takes the World Trade Center bombing in 1993 and its final destruction in 2001 as historical "bookends" for the material covered. His stated goal is to contribute to better mutual under standing between the West and the Islamic world.
