About this book

This book surveys the recent theory of wavelet transforms and its applications in various fields both within mathematics (singular integrals, localization of singularities) and beyond it, in computer vision, the physics of fractals, time-frequency analysis.

Modulators, mediators, and specifiers in brain function

Yigal H. Ehrlich .. [et al

This volume is an outcome of a satellite symposium held on November 4th and 5th, 1978, at the Missouri Institute of Psychiatry, St. Louis, in conjunction with the eighth annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. The symposium was planned and organized in order to provide information which may help in narrowing the gap between data obtained by investigators engaged in basic neuroscience research and the clinical implications of these findings. The empirical introduction of psychopharmacological agents to clinical use in the early 1950's facilitated investigations aimed at elucidating basic mechanisms that underlie brain function and behavior. In recent years, we have witnessed developments in the opposite direction; discoveries in the laboratories of researchers in the basic neurosciences have produced new approaches in treatment of the mentally ill patient. Receptors, the existence of which had heretofore been largely based on hypotheses, have been shown as entities which can be identified, isolated, and studied in the test tube. The complexity of receptor function has become apparent. In addition to containing binding sites for a specific neurotransmitter, the receptor exists as part of a macromolecular complex the activity of which may be modulated by neuroactive peptides and mediated by the generation of cyclic nucleotides. The cyclic nucleotides appear to exert their physiological effects by regulating protein phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycles. Different specific phosphoproteins control metabolic events in the cell interior. In addition, membrane-bound phosphoproteins may play a role in the regulation of receptor function, and this process may be regulated by neuropeptides. Thus, the receptor, when studied as a functional entity, may be analyzed as a multiplicity of interactions between binding sites, transmitters, modulators, mediators and specifiers in the nervous system. This book is concerned with recent studies which have sought to define the roles of neuropeptides, cyclic nucleotides, and phosphoproteins in neural function. These subjects are introduced in the first section of the volume, their potential mechanisms of action are discussed in a second section, and a third section is devoted to studies on the relevance of these systems to the etiology and treatment of some neuropsychiatric disorders. The experimental approaches described by the authors include physiological, neurochemical, pharmacological, behavioral, and clinical investigations, and clearly demonstrate the multi-disciplinary nature of current research in neuroscience.

Recent trends in algebraic development techniques

Francesco Parisi Presicce, (ed

This book constitutes the strictly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 12th International Workshop on Algebraic Development Techniques, WADT '98, held in Tarquinia, Italy, in June 1997.This book presents, besides three invited surveys, 21 carefully revised full papers selected from 40 presentations given at the workshop. The algebraic approach to the specification and development of systems, born as a formal method for abstract data types, encompases today the formal design of integrated hardware and software systems, new specification frameworks and a wide range of applications. This book presents the state-of-the-art in the area of algebraic software development.

Fractals in chemistry

Walter G. Rothschild

Fractals in Chemistry provides chemists with a concise, practical introduction to fractal theory and its applications to a wide range of "bread and butter" issues in chemistry. Drawing upon his considerable experience as a researcher who helped pioneer some of the methods he describes, Walter Rothschild critically appraises the power and limitations of the fractal approach and shows how it can provide more predictive classification schemes and explain phenomena difficult to handle by classical means. Then, with the help of nearly 100 illustrations, he demonstrates how to apply fractals to model chemical phenomena such as adsorption, aggregation, catalysis, chemical reactivity, degradation, and turbulent flames, and how to understand dynamics on fractals in terms of fractons in diffusion-limited reactions, dispersive spectroscopies, and energy transfer. Fractals in Chemistry is both a valuable working resource for professionals in physical chemistry, chemical physics, and computer modeling and an excellent graduate-level text for courses covering the use of fractals in chemistry.

Quality Assurance and Tolerance

Günter Kirschling

It is in general not possible to produce technical products having precisely predefined measures. Systematic and random deviations from nominal size cannot be avoided, and it is therefore necessary to define measurement tolerances. This book offers a comprehensive presentation of tolerance problems and their solution by statistical methods. All calculated solutions are presented in clear figure or graphical form. It is particularly appropriate for those working in the field of development and construction or in production and quality control, especially in mechanical engineering and related fields.
