Magnetism: A Supramolecular Function

by Olivier Kahn (1996)

About this book

Molecular magnetism is a new field of research dealing with the synthesis and study of the physical properties of molecular assemblies involving open-shell units. It is essentially interdisciplinary, joining together organic, organometallic and inorganic chemists, as well as theoreticians, physicists and materials scientists. At the core of research into molecular magnetism lie design and synthesis of new molecular assemblies exhibiting bulk properties such as long-range magnetic ordering or bistability with an hysteresis effect, which confers a memory effect on the system. In such terms, magnetism may be considered a supramolecular function. The first eight contributions to this volume present the state of the art in organic supramolecular chemistry, emphasising interlocked systems and molecular trees. The following six articles are devoted to molecular materials constructed from organic radicals and transition metal units. Molecular bistability is then focused on, followed by metal-organic and coordination magnetic materials. A new approach to nano-sized particles closes the work.

Large Clusters of Atoms and Molecules

T. P. Martin

Very recently it has become possible to produce and characterize large clusters containing an exact, predetermined number of atoms. Through these efforts it has become clear that clusters containing even as many as 20,000 atoms cannot yet be considered as being tiny crystals. Their structure is often icosahedral. Their electrons are organized into shells rather than bands. In many respects the clusters behave more like giant atoms than solids. The interest in clusters has grown explosively in the last few years and there has been no lack of conferences devoted to clusters in general. However, only a few groups have begun to develop the experimental and theoretical techniques needed for the study of clusters containing 100 or more atoms. In this book, representatives from these groups have contributed tutorial chapters explaining the methods they have developed. Audience: Scientists with little experience in clusters as well as cluster experts who wish to initiate experiments on large clusters.

Theory of high temperature superconductivity

Shigeji Fujita and Salvador Godoy

The book describes all basic experimental facts about high temperature superconductivity of materials, with a critical temperature of 30 Kelvin and higher, and explains them microscopically starting with a Hamiltonian followed by step-by-step statistical mechanical calculations. All important theoretical formulas are derived without omitting steps and all basic questions are answered in a manner which is easy to understand. The book is therefore suitable as a textbook for a second-year graduate physics course. Many fresh, and some challenging, ideas are presented and researches in the field are invited to examine the text.

Colloidal Dispersions Under Slit-Pore Confinement

Yan Zeng

<p>This dissertation contributes to the understanding of fundamental issues in the highly interdisciplinary field of colloidal science. Beyond colloid science, the system also serves as a model for studying interactions in biological matter. This work quantitatively investigated the scaling laws of the characteristic lengths of the structuring of colloidal dispersions and tested the generality of these laws, thereby explaining and resolving some long-standing contradictions in the literature. <br><br>It revealed the effect of confinement on the structuring, independently of specific properties of the confining interfaces. In addition, it resolved the influence of roughness and charge of the confining interfaces on the structuring, as well as providing a method to measure the effect of surface deformability on colloidal structuring.</p><p></p>

Cover of Photonics

Photonics

Ralf Menzel

This book covers the fundamental properties and the description of single photons and light beams, experimentally and theoretically. It explains the essentials of linear interactions and most nonlinear interactions between light and matter in both the transparent and absorbing cases. It also provides a basic understanding of modern lasers, as well as the principles of nonlinear optical spectroscopy. It is self-consistent and enriched by a large number of calculated illustrations, examples, and descriptive tables. Graduate students in physics and electrical engineering, as well as other sciences, will find this book a thorough introduction to the field, while for lecturers and scientists it is a rich source of useful information and a ready-to-hand reference.
