About this book

Monsieur Maurice, onetime gangster and now well-respected owner of the celebrated Sardine Restaurant, is found shot dead on a quiet Montmartre street. Maigret, perplexed by an apparently motiveless crime, enlists the aid of the lugubrious but encyclopedically knowledgeable Inspector Louis in unraveling some of the mysteries of the case; the superintendent soon finds cause to suspect the wifely devotion of Maurice's lovely blonde widow. And he is startled when he sees the priceless antique furniture in her apartment. The solution of this confusing affair eventually hangs on whether Maigret can trace a mysterious telephone caller with a high-pitched voice before other interested parties can get hold of him.

Since moving to Austin to ease the pain of past, tragic mistakes, she has led a life of virtual solitude, coming alive only when she hosts her show. To her loyal listeners, she is a wise and trusted friend who not only takes their music requests but listens to their problems and occasionally dispenses advice. Paris's world of isolation is brutally threatened, however, when one listener -- a man who identifies himself only as "Valentino" -- tells her that her on-air advice to the girl he loves has caused her to leave him and that now he intends to exact his revenge. First he plans to kill the girl, whom he has abducted -- which he says he will do in 72 hours -- then he will come after Paris. Joined by the Austin police department, Paris plunges into a race against time in an effort to find Valentino before he can carry out his threat to kill -- and to kill again. To her dismay, she finds that one of the people she must work with is crime psychologist Dean Malloy, a man with whom she shares a history that had a catastrophic effect on both their lives. His presence arouses old passions, forcing Paris to confront painful memories that she had come to Austin to forget. As the clock ticks down, and Valentino's threats come closer and closer to becoming a reality, Paris suddenly finds herself forced to deal with a killer who may not be a stranger at all.

Marianne was young, she was in Paris—that perfect setting for romance—and she had landed herself a glamorous job at the dress house of Florian, that most celebrated of all dress designers, and she was in love with Nat. On the face of it, things could not have been going better. The only snag was that she was not at all sure of Nat's feelings. Did he really look upon her as anything but an accommodating younger sister? Was she being foolish to expect anything more, especially in the face of the very strong competition offered by the lovely Lisette, whose beauty seemed to have blinded Nat to the fact that she was not quite such a nice girl as Marianne? It was a good thing, Marianne consoled herself, that she had nice kind Roger Senloe to turn to for comfort and advice.
