Naked civics

by Nate Garvis with Gene Rebeck (2012)

About this book

Safety, Good Health, Productivity, Compensation, Innovation, Preserved and Constructed Infrastructure, Passing on Knowledge, and Justice. These eight community imperatives, what Garvis dubs the "Naked 8," are things communities almost never argue about. Civic design acknowledges that the most pressing issues facing our communities are full of complexity and lie beyond the capabilities of any one institutional form. Institutions such as governments, businesses, non-profits, and non-governmental organizations are all built to excel at certain goals and none of them are designed to do everything well. It is only when we weave those tools together that we gain the capacity to sustain a forward movement.

Beyond the dependency culture

James Robertson

Twentieth-century capitalism and socialism propped each other up. Both belonged to the modern industrialized period of human history when the powerful interest groups of business and state dominated people, and Euro-American culture and power dominated the world. An emerging post-modern worldview foreshadows possibilities for a new path of progress, more deeply concerned for people and nature. Based on articles and lectures, this collection explores what this new path of progress could mean for politics, work, welfare, health, energy, the life of families and neighborhoods, the world role of today's rich countries, and other aspects of the human predicament today.
