Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems

by Shigeo Abe (1997)

About this book

<Em>Neural Networks and Fuzzy Systems: Theory and Applications</em> discusses theories that have proven useful in applying neural networks and fuzzy systems to real world problems. The book includes performance comparison of neural networks and fuzzy systems using data gathered from real systems. Topics covered include the Hopfield network for combinatorial optimization problems, multilayered neural networks for pattern classification and function approximation, fuzzy systems that have the same functions as multilayered networks, and composite systems that have been successfully applied to real world problems. The author also includes representative neural network models such as the Kohonen network and radial basis function network. New fuzzy systems with learning capabilities are also covered. <br/> The advantages and disadvantages of neural networks and fuzzy systems are examined. The performance of these two systems in license plate recognition, a water purification plant, blood cell classification, and other real world problems is compared.

Cover of Applications of Neural Networks

Applications of Neural Networks

Alan F. Murray

Applications of Neural Networks gives a detailed description of 13 practical applications of neural networks, selected because the tasks performed by the neural networks are real and significant. The contributions are from leading researchers in neural networks and, as a whole, provide a balanced coverage across a range of application areas and algorithms. The book is divided into three sections. Section A is an introduction to neural networks for nonspecialists. Section B looks at examples of applications using `Supervised Training'. Section C presents a number of examples of `Unsupervised Training'. For neural network enthusiasts and interested, open-minded sceptics. The book leads the latter through the fundamentals into a convincing and varied series of neural success stories -- described carefully and honestly without over-claiming. Applications of Neural Networks is essential reading for all researchers and designers who are tasked with using neural networks in real life applications.

Logics in artificial intelligence

José Júlio Alferes, João Leite (eds

Logics have, for many years, laid claim to providing a formal basis for the study and development of applications and systems in arti?cial intelligence. With the depth and maturity of formalisms, methodologies and logic-based systems - day, this claim is stronger than ever. The European Conference on Logics in Arti?cial Intelligence (or Journ´ ees Europ´ eennes sur la Logique en Intelligence Arti?cielle, JELIA) began back in 1988, as a workshop, in response to the need for a European forum for the discussion of emerging work in this ?eld. Since then, JELIA has been organized biennially, with English as its o?cial language, previous meetings taking place in Rosco?, France (1988), Amsterdam, Nether- ´ lands (1990), Berlin, Germany (1992), York, UK (1994), Evora, Portugal (1996), Dagstuhl,Germany(1998),M´ alaga,Spain(2000)andCosenza,Italy(2002). The increasinginterestinthisforum, itsinternationallevelwithgrowingparticipation from researchers outside Europe, and the overall technical quality have turned JELIA into a major biennial forum for the discussion of logic-based approaches to arti?cial intelligence. The 9th European Conference on Logics in AI, JELIA 2004, took place in Lisbon, Portugal, between the 27th and the 30th of September 2004, and was hosted by the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Its technical program comprised 3 invited talks, by Francesca Rossi, Franz Baader, and Bernhard Nebel, and the presentationof52refereedtechnicalarticlesselectedbytheProgramCommittee among the 144 that were submitted, a number which in our opinion clearly indicates that the research area of logics in AI is one with a great and increasing interest.

Programming Multi-Agent Systems

Mehdi Dastani, Jomi F. Hübner, Brian Logan

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on Programming Multi-Agents Systems held in Valencia, Spain, in June 2012. The 10 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 14 submissions covering a wide range of topics in multi-agent system programming languages, including language design and efficient implementation, agent communication, and robot programming. I addition to these regular papers, the volume includes six papers from the Multi-Agent programming Contest 2012 (MAPC).

Spiral Grain and Wave Phenomena in Wood Formation

John Maddern Harris

It is widely recognized that spiral grain in trees severely reduces the value of sawn timber through warping and loss of strength, and that it also causes problems for other wood uses as diverse as transmission poles or plywood. Yet, paradoxically, there are highly valued grain patterns including wavy and interlocked grain, whose origins in the cambium invite direct comparison with those of spiral grain, so that many authorities believe them to be related phenomena. In recent years this concept has prompted extensive research into the anatomy, genetics, and physiology of all such grain patterns in wood. As a result it has become apparent that tree cambia provide excellent systems through which to study the origins of stem polarity and the complex processes of morphogenetic control in plants. Beside these and other pressing topics for research, the book examines methods of measuring grain deviations, and considers their influence on wood properties, on the economics of timber production, and on wood manufacturing.
