Nonlinear Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics I

by Rouslan L. Stratonovich (1992)

About this book

This book gives the first detailed and coherent treatment of a young and exciting branch of statistical physics. The author presents a new common theoretical framework describing both linear and nonlinear nonequilibrium thermodynamics. This first of two volumes is concerned largely with the derivation and applications of various types of fluctuation-dissipation theorems. Both theoretical physicists and applied scientists will find this material of interest since the theoretical treatment is supported by numerous illustrative examples and application of the general result to a variety of electrical, thermal, mechanical and chemical systems.

Cover of Nonlinear science at the dawn of the 21st century

Nonlinear science at the dawn of the 21st century

P.L. Christiansen, M.P. Sørensen, A.C. Scott, (eds

Nonlinear science is by now a well established field of research at the interface of many traditional disciplines and draws on the theoretical concepts developed in physics and mathematics. The present volume gathers the contributions of leading scientists to give the state of the art in many areas strongly influenced by nonlinear research, such as superconduction, optics, lattice dynamics, biology and biomolecular dynamics. While this volume is primarily intended for researchers working in the field care, has been taken that it will also be of benefit to graduate students or nonexpert scientist wishing to familiarize themselves with the current status of research.

Cover of Coherent structures in complex systems

Coherent structures in complex systems

D. Reguera, L.L. Bonilla, J.M. Rubí (eds

A rich variety of real-life physical problems which are still poorly understood are of a nonlinear nature. Examples include turbulence, granular flows, detonations and flame propagation, fracture dynamics, and a wealth of new biological and chemical phenomena which are being discovered. Particularly interesting among the manifestations of nonlinearity are coherent structures. This book contains reviews and contributions reporting on the state of the art regarding the role of coherent structures and patterns in nonlinear science.

Cover of Conformal Invariance and Critical Phenomena

Conformal Invariance and Critical Phenomena

Malte Henkel

This book provides an introduction to conformal field theory and a review of its applications to critical phenomena in condensed-matter systems. After reviewing simple phase transitions and explaining the foundations of conformal invariance and the algebraic methods required, it proceeds to the explicit calculation of four-point correlators. Numerical methods for matrix diagonalization are described as well as finite-size scaling techniques and their conformal extensions. Many exercises are included. Applications treat the Ising, Potts, chiral Potts, Yang-Lee, percolation and XY models, the XXZ chain, linear polymers, tricritical points, conformal turbulence, surface criticality and profiles, defect lines and aperiodically modulated systems, persistent currents and dynamical scaling. The vicinity of the critical point is studied culminating in the exact solution of the two-dimensional Ising model at the critical temperature in a magnetic field. Relevant experimental results are also reviewed.

Cover of Efficient Solvers for Incompressible Flow Problems

Efficient Solvers for Incompressible Flow Problems

Stefan Turek

This book discusses recent numerical and algorithmic tools for the solution of certain flow problems arising in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which are governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It contains several of the latest results for the numerical solution of (complex) flow problems on modern computer platforms. Particular emphasis is put on the solution process of the resulting high dimensional discrete systems of equations which is often neglected in other works. Together with the included CD ROM which contains the complete FEATFLOW 1.1 software and parts of the "Virtual Album of Fluid Motion", which is a "Movie Gallery" with lots of MPED videos, the interested reader is enabled to perform his own numerical simulations or he may find numerous suggestions for improving his own computational simulations.
