Not in sisterhood

by Deborah Lindsay Williams (2001)

About this book

"Not in Sisterhood investigates an important transitional moment in the history of U.S. women's writing: the uneasy shift from the nineteenth-century model of the "lady author" to some new but undefined alternative. The careers of Edith Wharton and Willa Cather, together with that of their friend and peer Zona Gale, the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for drama, reveal several different strategies for negotiating this unknown terrain. While Gale made her feminist politics an integral part of her successful novels and plays, Wharton and Cather publicly denied any interest in gender issues or social reforms. Not in Sisterhood shows how the complex intersections of literary and social politics that shaped the world of Wharton, Cather, and Gale are still at work in today's feminist reconstructions of literary history."--BOOK JACKET.

Red Cloud

Robert W. Larson

Red Cloud was not born to leadership. He earned it. In his early years he gained a reputation for fierceness as a warrior and as a tactician against both whites and other Indian tribes. And in his middle years, his leadership against the U.S. Army in the Powder River country, his forcing the closure of the Bozeman Trail, and his strong pressure to negotiate the favorable outcome of the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868 made him the preeminent chief among the Sioux. In his later years, Red Cloud was an intermediary for his people in their dealings with the U.S. government. Although his motives at times were questioned, he steadfastly resisted encroachments on Sioux land during the reservation period, and he consistently protested the pressure by market-oriented whites to impose an agrarian economy on a people who had never farmed. Red Cloud's passionate belief in the values of his culture prevented him from acting as a culture broker; nevertheless, he remained an important figure of the Gilded Age.

Global security watch--the Caucasus states

Houman A. Sadri

The South Caucasus region, which is occupied by the Caucasus states of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, has historically been central to many significant national, regional, and international security issues, primarily due to its sensitive geopolitical position at the crossroads of regional and global powers. Few other regions in the world straddle as central a geographic position relative to major international security issues.

Hugo Chávez sin uniforme

Cristina Marcano, Alberto Barrera Tyszka

Bloodthirsty Bitches and Pious Pimps of Power

Gerry Spence

A blistering riposte to and expose of the right-wing media demagogues and their methods: Ann Coulter. Laura Ingraham. Nancy Grace. Bill O'Reilly. Sean Hannity. Pat Robertson. Their faces and voices are ubiquitous: the shrill shrieks and strident bellowings that drown out all debate and set every listener on edge, using God's and Jesus's names to justify oppression and ignorance, and spread falsehoods as if they were facts. They occupy the bully pulpit of the new American hate culture: the television and radio programs watched and heard by millions of people that shape the opinions and set the agendas of churches, school boards, political action groups, and ultimately those we have elected to represent all of us. Gerry Spence takes dead aim at the media demagogues who wield their power with such virulent effect. Using the full force of his own rhetorical skill--developed through decades as a legendary defense attorney--Spence exposes the people behind the words, and carves their arguments with the rough edge of his tongue. Anyone who has had it up to here will cheer to see these bullies met and conquered on their own turf.
