About this book

Ocular Disease-a newly introduced companion volume to the classic Adlerś Physiology of the Eye-correlates basic science and clinical management to describe the how and why of eye disease processes and the related best management protocols. Editors Leonard A. Levin and Daniel M. Albert-two of the world's leading ophthalmic clinician-scientists-have recruited as contributors the most expert and experienced authorities available in each of the major areas of ophthalmic disease specific to ophthalmology: retina, cornea, cataract, glaucoma, uveitis, and more. The concise chapter structure features liberal use of color-with 330 full-color line artworks, call-out boxes, summaries, and schematics for easy navigation and understanding. In print and online at expertconsult.com, this comprehensive resource provides you with a better and more practical understanding of the science behind eye disease and its relation to treatment. Includes access to the fully searchable text online at expertconsult.com, along with images and references. Covers all areas of disease in ophthalmology including retina, cornea, cataract, glaucoma, and uveitis for the comprehensive information you need for managing clinical cases. Presents a unique and pragmatic blend of necessary basic science and clinical application to serve as a clinical guide to understanding the cause and rational management of ocular disease.

This guide analyzes molecular techniques for studies of the infectious causes of sarcoidosis; recent discoveries on the genetics of sarcoidosis; methods for the evaluation of the sarcoidosis patient; areas commonly affected by sarcoidosis including the skin, eyes, and liver; the musculoskeletal manifestations of the disease; various therapies in sarcoidosis including alternatives to corticosteroids; the current literature on the quality-of-life of the sarcoidosis patient; and rare manifestations of the disease. This reference serves as a comprehensive source on the many aspects of sarcoidosis ranging from the basic science and pathophysiology of the disease to patient evaluation and treatment-providing a detailed analysis of the pulmonary aspects of the condition including chapters on radiographic manifestations, bronchoalveolar lavage research, pulmonary function studies, and proposed markers for the diagnosis and management of the disease.

Hypertension and the heart

Alberto Zanchetti ... [et al

This is a report on proceedings of a hypertension symposium. The editors cover cardiac hypertrophy from several viewpoints -- structural, molecular, pathophysiological, and clinical. This is the 432nd volume in the series on advances in experimental medicine and biology. The purpose is to publish new information on the pathophysiology of hypertension. Medical residents, fellows, researchers, and practitioners who are interested in pathophysiology and the basic aspects of hypertension as well as the significance of left ventricular hypertrophy should find this text fascinating. The book is a good review of the structural changes of left ventricular hypertrophy and the epidemiology that results. Important pathophysiology and clinical aspects of hypertension are also discussed. The references at the end of each chapter are excellent, current, and extensive. The illustrations are all in black-and-white but add to the text. All chapters are relatively short and pertinent. The index is very helpful. This text will be useful for clinicians who are interested in the mechanisms of disease and curious about some of the basic science strategies for reducing left ventricular mass in the presence of hypertension (i.e., use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors). This book is well written. It is not a text of the management of hypertension such as the recent text by Beevers, Hypertension in Practice, 3rd Edition (Martin Dunitz, 1999) or Bohm's From Hypertension to Heart Failure (Springer-Verlag, 1998).
