This volume contains the papers presented at the fourth International Conference on Object Oriented Information systems - OOIS 7, which is to be held at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia on 10-12 November 1997. The papers published in this volume highlight the contributions of leading researchers in the field who are working with Object-Oriented technology, theory and practice. Among the topics to be covered are: Object-Relational Data Technology; Distributed Object Computing; Patterns and Frameworks; Concepts and Methodologies; Multimedia Systems; Object-0riented Metrics; Object Reuse; Object Ontologies; Business Process Re-Design; Knowledge Management; Object Database Management Systems; and Interoperability Issues. Areas of significant interest to industry, especially in providing innovative directions for the development of next generation systems are also covered.
"Despite a wealth of efforts that examine separately the role entrepreneurs and universities play in economic development, no systematic effort has been made to examine the role universities play in promoting economic development through entrepreneurship. This book fills that gap, focusing on policy aspects of government-university partnerships with a discussion both of best practices and problematic strategies."--Jacket.
"Resilient by design provides managers with a more complete approach to creating lasting success in a changing world. Rich with examples and case studies, it explains how to connect the external systems, stakeholders, communities, infrastructure, supply chains, and natural resources, to create innovative organisations that survive and prosper." --Publisher description.
"In a short time, India has proven itself a major economic power, generating billions for its citizens and for the international community. How did India become a global market mover? And just as important, how can the Western world tap into the vast resources of commerce that India has, mine its phenomenal growth potential in a wide array of industries, and create a profitable relationship with the world's largest democracy?" "Few authors are as qualified to answer those questions as Kamal Nath. Known at home and throughout the world as the face of twenty-first century India, as well as a major architect of India's reform, Mr. Nath has spent his entire professional life within the corridors of power, helping to shape the policies that have catapulted his nation to world prominence." "In India's Century, Mr. Nath goes beyond the "flat-world" view to reveal the roots of the Indian economic miracle. With a compelling blend of economic analysis, political insight, and cultural observation, he traces his nation's emergence from colonial rule in 1947 through four decades of planned economies, the gradual liberalization of India's economy in the 1990s, and finally, the rise of the Indian global giant." "India's Century is must reading for business strategists, public policy makers, and every thoughtful reader who wishes to understand more about the world's largest, most vibrant democracy and the role it is likely to play on the global stage in the years ahead."--Jacket.
The book “PELAG: a beauty to be unveiled” offers a presentation of the restinga’s ecosystems, that is: of the native formations associated to the Atlantic Forest biome, and which are typically found in a sand strip quite close to the ocean. Regarding this ecosystem, in northern Rio de Janeiro state, movements that promote either its degradation or preservation have continuously become stronger in the social-environmental contexto – and we don’t know which will prevail. Much of the story has not yet been told, and much History is lost. Besides memories, restingas keep a great diversity of plants, animals and microorganisms that we are still not acquainted with. The book “PELAG: a beauty to be unveiled” is divided in four sections in which we register the natural and social histories of the Paraíba do Sul restinga; the formation of the Goytacazes fluviomarine plain – with special attentionto the Iguaçu river, which formed the Açu lake; the progressive restinga occupation from the 17th century on – with emphasis to the construction work performed by the DNOS; and the current water management system. We also found it relevant to go through previous proposals aiming to establish a conservation unit in the Paraíba do Sul restinga: proposals that culminated with the creation of the Porto do Açu and the PELAG itself. We emphasize how PELAG focuses on the native ecosystems’ conservation – such as coastal lakes, restingas and mangroves –, and also register PELAG’s bird species by classifying them in categories according to their habitat preferences, that is: birds from forest, open natural or anthropized, coastal-marine, and lake and wetland humid environments.
