Perceptual Image Coding with Discrete Cosine Transform

by Ee-Leng Tan, Woon-Seng Gan (2015)

About this book

This book first introduces classic as well as recent computational models for just-noticeable-difference (JND) applications. Since the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is applied in many image and video standards (JPEG, MPEG-1/2/4, H.261/3), the book also includes a comprehensive survey of computational models for JND that are based on DCT. The visual factors used in these computational models are reviewed in detail. Further, an extensive comparative analysis of these models using quantitative and qualitative performance criteria is presented, which compares the noise shaping performance of these models with subjective evaluation and the accuracy between the estimated JND thresholds and subjective evaluation. There are many surveys available on computational models for JND; however, these surveys seldom compare the performance of computational models that are based on DCT. The authors? survey of the computational models and their in-depth review of the visual factors used in them will help readers understand perceptual image coding based on DCT. The book also provides a comparative analysis of several perceptual image coders that are based on DCT, which are compatible with the highly popular and widely adopted JPEG standard.

Cover of Morphological Image Analysis

Morphological Image Analysis

Pierre Soille

Following the success of the first edition, recent developments in the field of morphological image analysis called for an extended second edition. The text has been fully revised with the goal of improving its clarity while introducing new concepts of interest to real image analysis applications. One chapter devoted to texture analysis has been added. Main extensions include: discussion about multichannel images and their morphological processing, ordering relations on image partitions, connected operators and levellings, homotopy for greytone images, translation-invariant implementations of erosions and dilations by line segments, reinforced emphasis on rank-based morphological operators, grey tone hit-or-miss, ordered independent homotopic thinnings and anchored skeletons, self-dual geodesic transformation and reconstruction, area based self-dual filters, anti-centre, watershed-based texture segmentation, texture models, and new scientific and industrial applications.

Cover of Optical Signal Processing

Optical Signal Processing

Pankaj K. Das

This book presents the background material necessary for an understanding of modern optical signal processing. Intended for graduate students in electrical engineering, physics, or optical engineering, the book covers fundamentals of geometrical and physical optics; propagation in anisotropic media; fiber optics; integrated optics; the electro-optic, acousto-optic and magneto-optic effects; noise and stochastic processes; matched, adaptive, Kalman, and lattice filters; two-dimensional signal processing; and the ambiguity and Wigner distribution functions. A discussion of non-optical signal processing devices, e.g. SAW, CCD, and digital, helps to provide an appreciation of the advantages of optical signal processing. The necessary mathematics is presented in the appendix.

Introduction to digital signal processing and filter design

Charles L. Wilkins, Jackson O. Lay, Jr

"Introduction to Digital Signal Processing and Filter Design was developed and fine-tuned from the author's twenty-five years of experience teaching classes in digital signal processing. Following a step-by-step approach, students and professionals quickly master the fundamental concepts and applications of discrete-time signals and systems as well as the synthesis of these systems to meet specifications in the time and frequency domains." "With its unique classroom-tested approach, Introduction to Digital Signal Processing and Filter Design is the ideal text for students in electrical and electronic engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics, and an accessible introduction or refresher for engineers and scientists in the field."--BOOK JACKET
