About this book

PIKKEDELI A Journey Through Memories Pikkadeli is primarily a literary love story. In this debut collection, Johan weaves together in his poetry the abstract and concrete mosaic pieces of images, feelings, and travel memories of his life as a soldier, husband, and father. Johan was born and raised on a small farm adjacent to the world-famous Cullinan Diamond Mine. His dreams started in this small Victorian charm village, lined with Jacaranda trees, cottages with intricate wrought-iron work and picket fences. He has written down his memories as poetry as he believes that life is like a dream full of memories, memories that shaped and moulded him into what he has become – a mosaic of images and feelings that offers some truth about his journeys, even if the details are sometimes blurred by the passing time. He realised he is nothing more than the experiences that shaped him. Where is the end of a dream and the beginning of life ... ?

Geography

Strabo

The *Geographica* (Ancient Greek: Γεωγραφικά, Geōgraphiká), or *Geography*, is an encyclopedia of geographical knowledge, consisting of 17 'books', written in Greek by Strabo, an educated citizen of the Roman empire of Greek descent. Work can have begun on it no earlier than 20 BC. A first edition was published in 7 BC followed by a gap, resumption of work and a final edition no later than 23 AD in the last year of Strabo's life. Strabo probably worked on his Geography and now missing History concurrently, as the Geography contains a considerable amount of historical data. Except for parts of Book 7, it has come down to us complete.

Charles Darwin

I have stated in the preface to the first Edition of this work, and in the Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle, that it was in consequence of a wish expressed by Captain Fitz Roy, of having some scientific person on board, accompanied by an offer from him of giving up part of his own accommodations, that I volunteered my services, which received, through the kindness of the hydrographer, Captain Beaufort, the sanction of the Lords of the Admiralty.

Traveling in Italy with Henry James

Fred Kaplan

Henry James was not only a great Victorian novelist. He was also one of the great travel writers of all time. Traveling in Italy with Henry James combines his vivid letters home from Italy with a selection of his most heartfelt and eloquent essays about the cities and rural areas he visited between 1869 and 1907. First arriving in Italy a year before it was united as a secular state, James was a firsthand observer of Italy's national adolescence and early adulthood. His letters bear witness to his spontaneous responses to the dramatic geography and the extroverted people, which were a refreshing contrast to the rainy climate and reserved Victorians he was accustomed to. In the essays James delves more deeply into his Italian experience. Unlike other collections of Henry James's Italian travel writing, Kaplan's anthology has been arranged geographically: He compiles for readers and tourists a literary map of James's Italy. This small, portable volume is the ideal companion for any explorer of Italy, and for the armchair tourist, Kaplan's collection provides a city-by-city tour of Florence, Venice, Rome, and the breathtaking countryside in between. In James's prose writings on Italy, readers will find the sensuous, passionate, human side of one of the most inspired writers in the English language.

The Desert and the Sown

Gertrude Bell

**From Goodreads:** A seeming contradiction, Gertrude Bell was both a proper Victorian and an intrepid explorer of the Arabian wilderness. She was a close friend of T. E. Lawrence, and played an important role in creating the modern map of the Middle East after World War I. The Desert and the Sown is a chronicle, illustrated by over 160 photos, of Bell's 1905 journey from Jericho to Antioch, a land of warring tribes under Turkish control.
