Quantum enigma

by Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner (2006)

About this book

"In trying to understand the atom, physicists built quantum mechanics, the most successful theory in science and the basis of one-third of our economy. They found, to their embarrassment, that with their theory, physics encounters consciousness. Authors Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner explain all this in non-technical terms with help from some fanciful stories and anecdotes about the theory's developers. They present the quantum mystery honestly, emphasizing what is and what is not speculation. Quantum Enigma's description of the experimental quantum facts, and the quantum theory explaining them, is undisputed. Interpreting what it all means, however, is heatedly controversial. But every interpretation of quantum physics involves consciousness. Rosenblum and Kuttner therefore turn to exploring consciousness itself-and encounter quantum mechanics. Free will and anthropic principles become crucial issues, and the connection of consciousness with the cosmos suggested by some leading quantum cosmologists is mind-blowing. Readers are brought to a boundary where the particular expertise of physicists is no longer the only sure guide. They will find, instead, the facts and hints provided by quantum mechanics and the ability to speculate for themselves. In the few decades since the Bell's theorem, experiments established the existence of entanglement (Einstein's 'spooky action'), interest in the foundations, and the mysteries, of quantum mechanics has accelerated. In recent years, physicists, philosophers, computer engineers, and even biologists have expanded our realization of the significance of quantum phenomena. This second edition includes such advances. The authors have also drawn on many responses from readers and instructors to improve the clarity of the book's explanations". --Publisher.

Today "s publishing infrastructure is rapidly changing. As electronic journals, digital libraries, collaboratories, logic servers, and other knowledge infrastructures emerge on the internet, the key aspects of this transformation need to be identified. Here, the author details the implications that this transformation is having on the creation, dissemination and organization of academic knowledge. The author shows that many established publishing principles need to be given up in order to facilitate this transformation. The text provides valuable insights for knowledge managers, designers of internet-based knowledge infrastructures, and professionals in the publishing industry. Researchers will find the scenarios and implications for research processes stimulating and thought-provoking.

Covering both the history of mathematics and of philosophy, Descartes's Mathematical Thought reconstructs the intellectual career of Descartes most comprehensively and originally in a global perspective including the history of early modern China and Japan. Especially, it shows what the concept of "mathesis universalis" meant before and during the period of Descartes and how it influenced the young Descartes. In fact, it was the most fundamental mathematical discipline during the seventeenth century, and for Descartes a key notion which may have led to his novel mathematics of algebraic analysis.

Most of the book is viewable on Google Books. Quotes from distinguished authors about it are posted on the Scribd.com website under the free draft intro chapters from my forthcoming book "The Brainstem Brainwaves of Atman-Brahman". O/OM was originally intended as a 'cosmology' written in verse describing the Individual's relation to his greater 'wholes' right up to the level of the cosmos. Whilst writing explanatory essays for the poetry, I identified the physical correlate of the Divine Light of Pure Consciousness (a.k.a. Atman, Cit, Godhead, Buddha Nature, Christ, Light of Cosmic Wisdom (Sophia) Nous, Al Haqq etc.) with a brain process known to all Medics - the brainwaves from the brainstem Reticular Formation known as the Reticular Activating System. I then went on to show how the whole of Western Physicalist Science is a set of limited abstractions describing regular spatiotemporal phenomena. The Bigger, Deeper Transcendentalist core picture of Indian Yogic Mysticism based on the Primacy of Consciousness swallows up the Western picture and can also account for Consciousness, Creativity, Inspiration, and the paranormal psychic phenomena and unexplained paradoxes of Quantum Physics which transcend the limitations of Physicalist Ontology.
