Return to the river

by Richard N. Williams (2005)

About this book

"Return to the River is the result of a unique 15-year collaboration among the authors investigating the decline and management of Columbia River salmon and steelhead populations. It advances the radical notion that the Columbia River is, in fact, a river, and that the solution to the loss of salmon and other species, is to "return to the river"--To a vision of the Columbia River as an ecosystem, rather than an economic machine."--Jacket.

Review of the state of world marine capture fisheries management

Cassandra De Young

During the first half of the 1990s, in response to the increasing concern about many of the world's fisheries and following the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), a number of international fisheries instruments provided an impetus for countries to strengthen their fisheries management. A key step in supporting such efforts is the development of more detailed, systematic and comparable information on fisheries environments and management trends. The State of World Marine Capture Fisheries Management Questionnaire was developed by FAO in 2004 to help meet this need. The results have been grouped by region and are reported in this publication. Today, we are able to look back to see how countries responded, to examine whether more fisheries are managed and to determine whether the management tools and strategies employed have improved the overall situation in marine capture fisheries. Trends in legal and administrative frameworks, management regimes and status of marine capture fisheries are analysed for 32 countries in the Indian Ocean and presented as an easy-to-read and informative reference for policy decision-makers, fishery managers and stakeholders.--Publisher's description.

The farm as natural habitat

Dana L. Jackson and Laura L. Jackson

Contributors bring together insights and practices from conservation biology, sustainable agriculture and biodiversity, and farming, in support of the idea that the agricultural landscape can be restored to a healthy diversity. They offer examples of an alternative agriculture that can produce healthy food, functioning ecosystems, and populations of native species. Material originated at a June 1998 seminar on agroecological restoration.

Rethinking park protection

Will La Page

"In today's society, hidden beliefs can subtly guide the management of parks, such as treating them as natural resources rather than national assets. Resulting management practices often lead to deferred maintenance on park infrastructure, causing inadequate protection from vandalism, poaching, and theft of artefacts. A sad demise, often due to an out-dated belief that parks are non-essential leisure services rather than necessities for a vibrant modern life. This book challenges the reader to examine the core beliefs that created our public parklands, comparing them with the beliefs that guide contemporary park stewardship in an effort to improve the management of parks and reassess their purpose in modern life."--Pub. desc.

The European Landscape Convention

Michael Jones, Marie Stenseke

This important and insightful book provides, for the first time, a broad presentation of ongoing research into public participation in landscape conservation, management and planning, following the 2000 European Landscape Convention which came into force in 2004. The book examines both the theory of participation and what lessons can be learnt from specific European examples. It explores in what manner and to what extent the provisions for participation in the European Landscape Convention have been followed up and implemented. It also presents and compares different experiences of participation in selected countries from northern, southern, eastern and western Europe, and provides a critical examination of public participation in practice. However, while the book's focus is necessarily on Europe, many of the conclusions drawn are of global relevance. The book provides a valuable reference for researchers and advanced students in landscape policies and management, as well as for professionals and others interested in land-use planning and environmental management.
