Social culture and high-tech economic development

by Fred Phillips (2006)

About this book

Our understanding of technology's role in modern regional economic development has not kept pace with the rush of governments, civic organizations and NGOs to launch new technology based economic development ("TED") initiatives. This book advances our understanding of TED from a practical, applied viewpoint and is enriched by short contributions from other key figures in Austin's and Portland's technopolis efforts. Focusing on the Austin (Texas) and Portland (Oregon) experiences, but drawing from a wealth of other regional examples, this volume shows how to achieve successful TED and demonstrates through case studies the ten principles that no TED initiative can afford to ignore. Once mastered, these principles can enable regions to become new centres of economic activity for the new century.

Dorothy Marcic

"Dorothy Marcic has created a story chronicling the development of women. Using the country's Top 40 hits with archetypes, lyrics, and personal stories from 1900 through 2000, she shows how in the early part of the century song lyrics resonated with women's dependency and compliant natures; echoed their eventual rebellion in the late 1960s; and mirrored their development as mature, independent persons in the '90s."--BOOK JACKET.

"Relating to clothes is a fundamental experience in the lives of most Western women. Even when choice is fraught with ambivalence, clothing matters. From considerations about dressing for success, to worries about weight, through to investing particular articles of clothing with meaning bordering on the sacred, what we wear speaks volumes about personal identity - what is revealed, what is concealed, what is created. This book fills a gap in the existing literature on the ambivalence of fashion and dress by drawing on a wide range of women's experiences with their wardrobes and providing empirical data noticeably absent from other studies of women and dress. Navigating what is clearly a contested realm in feminist scholarship, contributors provide rich case studies of the reality of women's relationships with clothing. While on the surface concerns about fashion or dress may appear to reflect gendered patterns, in fact clothing may be used to challenge ascribed meanings about femininity."--

"This book challenges the current thinking on trust largely based on studies in stable contexts, by presenting new empirical studies of trust and trust building in a number of less stable, less institutionalized settings. These contexts are gaining in prominence given the globalization and virtualization of organizational relations, development of high velocity markets, and the growing importance of intangible resources."--Jacket.

Saving capitalism and democracy

Mohamed Rabie

"Both Europe and North America are in the middle of an economic and financial crisis that has given birth to a growing social crisis. Failure to deal with the crisis comprehensively threatens to cause state defaults and instigate a global economic recession. Prolonged economic crises cause social crises that, if left unresolved, instigate violence and revolutions. Rabie analyzes the causes of the crisis and articulates a strategy to deal with its many facets. Saving Capitalism and Democracy tries to answer the difficult questions posed by intellectuals, the media, politicians, students, and ordinary people concerning the crisis and how to avert an impending catastrophe" -Back cover.
