About this book

"The unforgettable, entertaining, and inspiring memoir of the activist, teacher, entrepreneur, and spiritual leader that illuminates some of the most revolutionary events of a generation, many of the legendary people who defined it, and a towering figure at the center of it. Larry Brilliant's life journey has led him on a purposeful path across continents and countercultural movements, marching arm-in-arm with the men and women who defined a generation. A man who has always been in the right place at the right time, Brilliant has engaged with some of the most prominent thought leaders, spiritual masters, heroes, and icons in the world, including Neem Karoli Baba (Maharajji), Martin Luther King, Jr., Steve Jobs, Mikhail Gorbachev, Wavy Gravy, the Grateful Dead, the Dalai Lama, and Barack Obama. But this self-proclaimed "typical Jewish kid from Detroit" was no accidental witness to history. Brilliant is a force of nature in his own right, responsible for some of the most significant medical, spiritual, and social achievements of the past century--from the eradication of smallpox and treatment of blindness to introducing the teachings of the Maharajji to the Woodstock Generation, to launching Google's philanthropic enterprises. Now for the first time, Brilliant reflects on his remarkable life and his extraordinary experiences as a doctor, innovator, philanthropist, and cultural revolutionary. As he recalls the past fifty years and all that he has seen and done, this masterful storyteller offers transformative messages of wisdom and compassion that will inspire everyone to work towards a better, more brilliant existence. His is a truly cinematic and fun journey--and a profound search for meaning that provides a new perspective on what it means to be engaged with life's most important questions"-- Brilliant's life journey has made him man who has always been in the right place at the right time, engaging with some of the most prominent thought leaders, spiritual masters, heroes, and icons in the world. When Bill Frist was elected to the United States Senate, he quickly became the poster-boy for compassionate conservative values. An enigma in D.C. politics, Frist is admired across party lines and has steadily risen in Senate leadership. In 2002, he was unanimously elected the United States Senate Majority Leader--a position of unique honor. From this seat, where he counsels the President and makes major decisions affecting Americans, he frequently turns to his faith when grappling with issues like bioterrorism, AIDS, and abortion rights. In this authorized biography of the Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist will discuss issues that are close to his heart and his desk in Washington. His sometimes controversial positions on issues like the war in Iraq, funding for AIDS in Africa, Medicare, and other headline-grabbing debates will be discussed in length, and in view of his faith position.

Communicable disease epidemiology and control

Roger Webber

Communicable diseases can devastate whole populations and are a problem in both developing countries and the developed world. Understanding their epidemiology is vital to the doctor and communicable disease specialist involved in their control. This book draws on the depth of practical experience gained by the author and a wide range of other sources to review communicable diseases in a global perspective. The main part of the book covers a wide range of the important communicable diseases and this is further supported by a comprehensive outline of known communicable diseases given in an annex at the end of the book. The first part describes epidemiological methods and illustrates their use with practical examples. The second part covers communicable diseases in a systematic manner grouping diseases by epidemiological criteria. This classification enables control to be instigated using the epidemiological principles and control methods described in the first part of the book. Grouping diseases in this manner also makes it easier to understand and link them together, so facilitating learning. . The book balances informativeness with a simple and practical delivery. It is an essential tool for all doctors, epidemiologists, and those working in the control of communicable diseases, especially in developing countries. It is designed to present a clear introduction for medical students, public health specialists and those involved in disease control.

Amazing courage

Margy Dieguez

"The year was 1952 ... and in one moment that summer my life was changed forever. A dreaded virus was running rampant throughout the United States. Technically called infantile paralysis, this virus was more commonly known as polio. There had been sixty thousand documented cases and three thousand deaths that year, the last big epidemic before Dr. Jonas Salk discovered his vaccine. At fifteen years old I was diagnosed with this disease that the entire United States feared. My story is one of finding a way to overcome everyday problems posing monumental obstacles. After forty days in an iron lung; in an isolation ward for five months and eight months of rehabilitation, and being unable to use my arms and legs normally I had many challenges. Learning to walk again I married and had children but soon I was alone raising a six year old son and two year old daughter. It is my belief that my life has been what it was supposed to be. I believe I have lived life to the fullest and for that I am forever grateful for all the amazing people who helped me along the way and the amazing God who made it all possible Courage The measure of one's courage should not be judged alone by how tall a mountain is but also by how tall was the mountain to the one who climbed it."--Back cover.
