Political Thought in the Dutch Republic

E.H. Kossmann

"What political theories did the Dutch develop in the seventeenth century, to describe and justify the existence of a republic that in one generation had grown conspicuously in wealth and power? In this book, the author shows the meaning of political philosophy for a new and surprisingly energetic state." "The first essay is a study of Dutch political theory in the seventeenth century and is based on an analysis of publications in law and philosophy dating from the 1660s to the 1690s. The second essay studies the Dutch concept of popular sovereignty in the early seventeenth century, whereas the third considers the Dutch seventeenth and eighteenth-century views on the nature of a republic. These three essays, previously published as independent articles, are brought together here for the first time in English. An introduction has been added in which the author places the original texts in a new perspective"--Book jacket.

The history of the Mazruʻi dynasty of Mombasa

Shaykh Al-Amin Bin ʻAli Al Mazruʻi

This history of the Mazrui family, who ruled Mombasa for more than 100 years up to 1837, is published here in an English translation, together with the original Arabic text. It was written by the late Shaykh Al-Amin bin Ali Al Mazrui, formerly Chief Qadhi of Kenya Colony, and embodies the oral Mazrui family tradition, which stretches back beyond the evidence of English documents to the late seventeenth century. The text sheds light on a period of rapid change during the eighteenth century, and is further enhanced by James Ritchie's invaluable comments, maps, genealogies and chronological tables. The volume reveals important links between Arabic and KiSwahili culture, and will be welcomed by historians of East Africa and the Middle East.

Richard Norton Smith

Repeatedly during his eight years as president, George Washington saved the infant republic from the factionalism and the involvement in foreign wars that threatened its existence. He skillfully moderated the feuds among his cabinet -- especially those between Hamilton and Jefferson -- and achieved his own political ends by seeming to be above politics. His actions and character defined the very nature of the presidency and, even more than the Constitution itself, made the new American government work. Better than any biographer before him, Richard Norton Smith gives us the "living" Washington, a working politician beset by crises, a masterly manager of men and events, anything but the time-worn marble monument. - Back cover.

Helmut Schmidt

"Helmut Heinrich Waldemar Schmidt (German pronunciation: [hlmt mt]; born 23 December 1918) is a German Social Democratic politician who served as Chancellor of West Germany from 1974 to 1982. Prior to becoming Chancellor, he had served as Minister of Defence (1969?72). As Minister of Finance (1972 to 1974), he gained credit for financial policies that consolidated the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle), giving Germany the most stable currency and economic position in the world. He had also served briefly as Minister of Economics and as acting Foreign Minister. As Chancellor, he focused on international affairs, seeking "political unification of Europe in partnership with the United States". He was an energetic diplomat who sought European co-operation and international economic co-ordination. He was re-elected chancellor in 1980, but his coalition fell apart in 1982 with the switch by his coalition allies, the Free Democratic Party. He retired from Parliament in 1983, after clashing with the SPD's left wing, who opposed him on defence and economic issues. In 1986 he was a leading proponent of European monetary union and a European central bank. He is now fully retired. On the 9th of April 2010 he became the oldest surviving German Chancellor in history, when he exceeded the lifespan of Konrad Adenauer, who died in 1967, having lived for 91 years and 15 weeks. He received the prestigious Hanns Martin Schleyer Prize in 2013."--Wikipedia.
