Synthetic datasets for statistical disclosure control

by Jörg Drechsler (2011)

About this book

The aim of this book is to give the reader a detailed introduction to the different approaches to generating multiply imputed synthetic datasets. It describes all approaches that have been developed so far, provides a brief history of synthetic datasets, and gives useful hints on how to deal with real data problems like nonresponse, skip patterns, or logical constraints. Each chapter is dedicated to one approach, first describing the general concept followed by a detailed application to a real dataset providing useful guidelines on how to implement the theory in practice. The discussed multiple imputation approaches include imputation for nonresponse, generating fully synthetic datasets, generating partially synthetic datasets, generating synthetic datasets when the original data is subject to nonresponse, and a two-stage imputation approach that helps to better address the omnipresent trade-off between analytical validity and the risk of disclosure. The book concludes with a glimpse into the future of synthetic datasets, discussing the potential benefits and possible obstacles of the approach and ways to address the concerns of data users and their understandable discomfort with using data that doesn’t consist only of the originally collected values. The book is intended for researchers and practitioners alike. It helps the researcher to find the state of the art in synthetic data summarized in one book with full reference to all relevant papers on the topic. But it is also useful for the practitioner at the statistical agency who is considering the synthetic data approach for data dissemination in the future and wants to get familiar with the topic.

Statistics for business and economics

James T. McClave, P. George Benson

"Statistics for Business and Economics, 7/e, is the tool students need to help them become informed business decision makers in the twenty-first century. Important statistical ideas and techniques are presented within the context of real-life business situations. The reader is challenged to think critically about problems and to employ one of the many technological tools available - including EXCEL, SPSS, SAS, or Minitab - to reach an informed, well-presented conclusion. Exciting new problem-solving oriented features of the book include: Statistics in Action - boxes in each chapter examine high-profile business, economics, government, and entertainment issues with questions to motivate thought and discussion; Showcases - six extensive, real-business cases present background information and guidelines for performing a statistical analysis using data files contained on the enclosed data disk. The student gains hands-on experience in preparing a professional document to present the results of the analysis and to draw conclusions based on the data; and Internet Lab - six labs instruct the student in retrieving and analyzing raw data downloaded from the Internet."--BOOK JACKET.

Cover of Inflated

Inflated

Christopher Whalen

"Americans as a whole view themselves as reasonably prudent and sober people when it comes to matters of money, reflecting the puritan roots of the earliest European settlers. Yet as a community, we also seem to believe that we are entitled to a lifestyle that is well-beyond our current income, a tendency that goes back to the earliest days of the United States and particularly to get rich quick experiences ranging from the Gold Rush of the 1840s to the real estate bubble of the early 21st Century. Inflated examines this apparent conflict and makes the argument that such a world view is so ingrained in us that to expect the United States to live in a "deflated" world is simply unrealistic. It skillfully seeks to tell the story of, money inflation and public debt as enduring (and perhaps endearing) features of American life, rather than something we can one day overcome as our policy makers constantly promise. Features interviews with today's top financial industry leaders and insiders. Offer a glimpse into the future of the Federal Reserve and the role it will play in the coming years. Examines what the future may hold for the value of the U.S. dollar and the real incomes of future generations of Americans. The gradual result of the situation we find ourselves in will inevitably lead to inflation, loss of economic opportunity, and a decline in the value of the dollar. This book will show you why, and reveal how we might be able to deal with it."--
