The archive of loss

by Maura Finkelstein (2019)

About this book

Mumbai's textile industry is commonly but incorrectly understood to be an extinct relic of the past. In 'The Archive of Loss' Maura Finkelstein examines what it means for textile mill workers-who are assumed not to exist-to live and work during a period of deindustrialization. Finkelstein shows how mills are ethnographic archives of the city where documents, artifacts, and stories exist in the buildings and in the bodies of workers. Workers' pain, illnesses, injuries, and exhaustion narrate industrial decline; the ways in which they live in tenements exist outside and resist the values expounded by modernity; and the rumors and untruths they share about textile worker strikes and a mill fire help them make sense of the industry's survival. In outlining this archive's contents, Finkelstein shows how mills, which she conceptualizes as lively ruins, become a lens through which to challenge, reimagine, and alter ways of thinking about the past, present, and future in Mumbai and beyond.

"The past few years have seen incredible innovations and growth in the way legal services can be delivered--yet most law firms around the world continue to practice law the way it's been practiced for centuries, namely, as a labor-intensive endeavor carried out by high-priced lawyers billing by the hour. Directly inspired by Richard Susskind's groundbreaking The End of Lawyers? (Oxford Univ. Press 2008) Toronto lawyer Mitchell Kowalski now provides a vivid, believable account of everything a law firm could be. The fictional firm of Bowen, Fong and Chandri, PC, represents the cutting edge of how a law firm can deliver top-notch legal services, build business and satisfy clients, end reliance on the billable hour, leverage technology, and constantly enhance and improve its performance--all while attracting and retaining top talent. Through the eyes of a general counsel considering whether to retain the firm, and a new associate learning how the firm operates, you'll discover the surprising secrets that those running the law firms of the future need to know"--Provided by publisher.

Learning leadership in a changing world

Mark W. McCloskey

"In the second decade of the 21st century, it is increasingly apparent that personality power and technical-managerial competence are no longer the primary qualifiers for developing effective leadership. Learning Leadership in a Changing World provides direction and support in the form of the 4R Model of Leadership--a theoretically sound, conceptually straightforward, and educationally powerful framework. The framework and content of the 4R Model replaces the charisma and competence images of leadership effectiveness with a fresh vision of 'good leadership' as virtue-based influence, and provides a developmental framework to put this new perspective into practice. With over a decade of experience developing transformative leadership graduate programs, Dr. McCloskey offers the blueprint for scholars to think with conceptual clarity about 21st century leadership effectiveness. McCloskey introduces the 'New Normal,' the social, economic, and cultural change which has created a fundamentally new leadership landscape of disruptive threats and discontinuous change. This narrative is replacing images of success grounded in charisma and managerial competence with an ancient configuration of personal assets, 'virtue-driven influence.' McCloskey looks to discount developmental fatalism of the Old Normal and argues that leadership effectiveness is available to many, and not merely a few. Learning Leadership in a Changing World provides the theoretical, educational, and developmental framework to help professors, scholars, and graduate students understand modern leadership in light of 21st century challenges and opportunities. "-- "What makes for an effective twenty-first century leader? A popular consensus has emerged around two primary qualifiers--charisma and technical-managerial competence. It is, however, increasingly evident these assets are diminishing in value. Learning Leadership in a Changing World provides an alternative vision of effective leadership in the form of the 4R Model, which replaces the charisma and competence images of leadership effectiveness with a fresh vision of "good leadership" as virtue-based influence"--

Treating dementia

"Treatment for age-related dementia and the growing reliance on pharmaceuticals to alleviate its worst symptoms raise a number of questions about attitudes toward aging and cognition, the relationship between growing older and getting sick, and the conflicting interests of patients, caregivers, physicians, scientists, and business. This volume aims to foster a constructive debate about the future of dementia treatment by providing multiple perspectives on these tangled issues."--Jacket.
