The Dynamics of Control

by Fritz Colonius, Wolfgang Kliemann (2000)

About this book

The Dynamics of Control provides a carefully integrated development of the mathematical connections between nonlinear control, dynamical systems, and time-varying perturbed systems for scientists and engineers. The central theme is the notion of control flow with its global dynamics and linearization presented in detail. The book's scope is comprehensive and includes global theory of dynamical systems under time-varying perturbations, global and local dynamics of control systems, connections between control systems and dynamical systems and the relevant numerical methods for global dynamics, linearization, and stability. Topics are developed with a diverse and extensive selection of applied problems from control and dynamical systems. Topics and Features: * complete coverage of unified theory of control flows * wide array of motivating problems from control and dynamical systems to appeal to mathematicians, scientists, and engineers * relevant motivation and a listing of important definitions and results at the beginning of each chapter * a compilation of essential background information in four appendices: nonlinear geometric control, topological theory of dynamical systems, computations of reachable sets, and numerical solution of Hamilton-Jacobi-Belman equations * discussion of numerical methods This new text and self-study reference guide is an excellent resource for the foundations and applications of control theory and nonlinear dynamics. All graduates, practitioners, and professionals in control theory, dynamical systems, perturbation theory, engineering, physics, and nonlinear dynamics will find the book a rich source of ideas, methods, and applications.

Omnidirectional Optical Filters

Vladimir Kochergin

Optical Filters play an important role in the areas of imaging, sensing, MEMS and photonics. Omnidirectional Optical Filters gives an integrated presentation of this new type of filter design that is rapidly becoming an integral part of these areas. Not only does the book give the reader a fresh look at the development of optical filter material; it is the first text dedicated to the explanation of omnidirectional optical filters. Beginning with the description of the basic optical phenomena behind these filters, the book moves on to classical filter design, and then newer designs. For the first time, omnidirectional short-pass, band pass, band-blocking and narrow band-pass filter designs are explained in detail. For graduate and undergraduate students interested in optics, photonics and MEMS, this book will give a thorough understanding of the design, fabrication and theory behind omnidirectional optical filters. Engineers in imaging, sensing and MEMS looking to learn more about these filters will also find it a valuable reference and tool.

H &#x221E%x; Engineering and Amplifier Optimization

Jeffery C. Allen

H-infinity engineering continues to establish itself as a discipline of applied mathematics. As such, this extensively illustrated monograph makes a significant application of H-infinity theory to electronic amplifier design, demonstrating how recent developments in H-infinity engineering equip amplifier designers with new tools and avenues for research. The amplification of a weak, noisy, wideband signal is a canonical problem in electrical engineering. Given an amplifier, matching circuits must be designed to maximize gain, minimize noise, and guarantee stability. These competing design objectives constitute a multiobjective optimization problem. Because the matching circuits are H-infinity functions, amplifier design is really a problem in H-infinity multiobjective optimization. To foster this blend of mathematics and engineering, the author begins with a careful review of required circuit theory for the applied mathematician. Similarly, a review of necessary H-infinity theory is provided for the electrical engineer having some background in control theory. The presentation emphasizes how to (1) compute the best possible performance available from any matching circuits; (2) benchmark existing matching solutions; and (3) generalize results to multiple amplifiers. As the monograph develops, many research directions are pointed out for both disciplines. The physical meaning of a mathematical problem is made explicit for the mathematician, while circuit problems are presented in the H-infinity framework for the engineer. A final chapter organizes these research topics into a collection of open problems ranging from electrical engineering, numerical implementations, and generalizations to H-infinity theory.

Efficient Solvers for Incompressible Flow Problems

Stefan Turek

This book discusses recent numerical and algorithmic tools for the solution of certain flow problems arising in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which are governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It contains several of the latest results for the numerical solution of (complex) flow problems on modern computer platforms. Particular emphasis is put on the solution process of the resulting high dimensional discrete systems of equations which is often neglected in other works. Together with the included CD ROM which contains the complete FEATFLOW 1.1 software and parts of the "Virtual Album of Fluid Motion", which is a "Movie Gallery" with lots of MPED videos, the interested reader is enabled to perform his own numerical simulations or he may find numerous suggestions for improving his own computational simulations.

Applications of Liapunov Methods in Stability

A. Halanay, V. Răsvan

This volume, which coincides with the centennial anniversary of the publication of the celebrated monograph The General Problem of the Stability Motion by A.M. Liapunov, reviews the current state of the art of the theory and applications of the Liapunov methods. The book contains an Introduction and four chapters. Chapter 2 presents some general results in stability theory. The remaining chapters deal with applications in power engineering, chemical engineering, and in non-engineering fields such as economics and in the modelling of interacting species. The beauty of the results obtained, the diversity of mathematical tools employed, and the described approach to mathematical modelling provide stimulating considerations for applications in many other fields. For mathematicians and engineers whose work involves the study and applications of stability theory in systems.
