The furniture of Carlo Mollino

by Napoleone Ferrari, Fulvio Ferrari (2006)

About this book

"Original and inventive, the work of Carlo Mollino (1905-73) is a unique chapter in the history of twentieth-century Italian design and architecture. For the first time, this book presents his complete works in furniture and interior design. Most of Mollino's furniture was site specific with one-off pieces created for specially commissioned interiors. Rarely available, these works are highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts alike." "From the start, both Mollino's interests and personality set him apart from his contemporaries. Influenced by the Second Futurism and Surrealist avant-gardes, Mollino was a modern-day Renaissance man active in an impressive number of fields, including aeronautics, automobile design, art, photography, set design, town planning, furniture, interior decoration and architecture. Through his extensive artistic research, he was able to combine various contrasting forms of expression, which gave his work a remarkable and unusual dynamic. His furniture was based on organic shapes, such as tree branches, animal horns and the human body - with the female profile figuring prominently in his designs. Beyond this highly personal aesthetic, his work involved research into materials and technology, and the development of complex construction techniques, as with the celebrated bent plywood 'Arabesque' table of 1950." "Illustrated with original drawings, sketches and archival photographs, The Furniture of Carlo Mollino represents the most comprehensive record of Mollino's design production. Realized in collaboration with the Museo Casa Mollino and written by the Museum's curators, Napoleone and Fulvio Ferrari, this monograph offers an insight into Mollino's groundbreaking oeuvre."--BOOK JACKET.

"The Swiss artist, designer and architect Max Bill (1908-1994) remains a key figure in Europe's applied arts and is one of Concrete and Constructive art's most influential exponents. Bill's 100th birthday offers the occasion to cast a new glance at his versatile oeuvre; several of the sculptures, paintings, furnishings, use objects and typographies in this book have only rarely been available for viewing. The texts additionally shed light on Bill's artistic environment and document his influence on other artists."--Jacket.

Bones of the earth, spirit of the land

essay by Nicholas Capasso

"Bones of the Earth, Spirit of the Land, spans the twenty-five year career of the internationally recognized sculptor John Van Alstine. Beginning with early stone carvings reminiscent of Modernists such as Hans Arp and Constantin Brancusi, this book traces the rapid development of a style and themes centered on combining roughly hewn stone and metal. Van Alstine has an abiding concern for the land resulting in sculptures that "elicit meaning through their juxtapositions with existing landscapes, and also transform places from the mundane to the magical," according to Nicholas Capasso in his introductory essay. Also featured in this book are many of Van Alstine's drawings and early "easel paintings.""--BOOK JACKET.

Robert Kushner's aim as an artist has been "to please the eye and thereby satisfy the human soul." This magnificent new midcareer survey proves how well he has succeeded during twenty-five years that have included flamboyant early performance and fabric pieces; a period as a leader of the Pattern and Decoration movement; his return to the figure in the 1980s; up to his current concentration on flower and other still lifes of unmatched sensuality and opulence. These recent works celebrate the cycle of creation and destruction, the fruition, decay, and renewal that compose the eternal rhythm of natural life.

Between drawing and painting

Matthew Simms

Cezanne's watercolours exhibit not only kaleidoscopic arrays of translucence but also very light graphite pencil lines that contrast strikingly with the soft watery touches of colour. These drawn lines have been largely overlooked in previous studies of Cezanne's work in this medium. In this ravishing book, Matthew Simms argues that it was the dialogue between drawing and painting - the movement between pencil and paintbrush - that attracted Cezanne to watercolour. The technique allowed Cezanne to express what he termed his "sensations" in two distinct modes that become a record of his shifting and spontaneous responses to his subject. Combining close visual analysis and examination of historical context, Simms focuses on the counterpoint of drawing and colour in Cezanne's work over the course of his career and as viewed in relation to his oil paintings. More than a tool for sketching or preparing for oil paintings, Simms contends, watercolour was a unique means of expression in its own right that allowed Cezanne to combine in one place the two otherwise opposed mediums of drawing and painting.
