A history of the McDonald family traced from 835 in Ireland to the fur trading family of the 1800s in Montana. Angus McDonald (1816-1889) was born at Craig, Scotland, and hired on with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1838. In 1842 he married a Nez Perce part-Mohawk Indian named Catherine at Fort Hall, Idaho. They settled near Thompson Falls and Post Creek in Montana, and Colville in Washington where Angus was in charge of the fort and affairs of the Company. They raised twelve children. Many descendants live on and around the Flathead Reservation in Montana. The fur trading business is extensively described. The Battle of Big Hole in Montana as well as other Nez Perce events and genealogy are also elaborated. .

The author stated in the Preface that this 700-page biography is based upon original manuscripts. He wrote, “In addition to their regular correspondence with the Mission Board, Zeisberger and his fellow missionaries wrote voluminous journals of their everyday life among the Indians, as also complete reports of any occurrences of special interest. These manuscripts, which are mostly in the German language and number many thousands of pages, have been preserved, and I have carefully studied them all.” A comprehensive geographical glossary and an exceptionally detailed index are found at the end of the book.

Kenneth S. Whitton

"The story of Goethe and Schubert unfolds in an era that saw German art song evolve from folk song. Author Kenneth Whitton explores Goethe's involvement with the music and musicians of his time, demonstrating that he had well-developed musical taste and sensibilities; for his part Schubert was surprisingly well read in the literature of his time and attuned to intellectual and cultural developments. The author details the efforts made by friends to acquaint Goethe with Schubert's Lieder, and Schubert with Goethe's poems and even - unsuccessfully - with Goethe himself."--BOOK JACKET. "Ultimately 80 Lieder and Lied fragments resulted from their collaboration. Professor Whitton discusses both text and music for each Schubert setting of a Goethe poem."--BOOK JACKET.
