The Method of Volume Averaging

by Stephen Whitaker (1999)

About this book

Multiphase systems dominate nearly every area of science and technology, and the method of volume averaging provides a rigorous foundation for the analysis of these systems. The development is based on classical continuum physics, and it provides both the spatially smoothed equations and a method of predicting the effective transport coefficients that appear in those equations. The text is based on a ten-week graduate course that has been taught for more than 20 years at the University of California at Davis and at other universities around the world. Problems dealing with both the theoretical foundations and the applications are included with each chapter, and detailed solutions for all problems are available from the author. The course has attracted participants from chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, hydrologic science, mathematics, chemistry and physics.

Percolation Models for Transport in Porous Media

V. I. Selyakov, V. V. Kadet

This book presents a new percolation theory for fluid flow and electric current in heterogeneous porous media. Several models for different types of flow are developed. These models are applied in multi-phase flow in porous media, petrophysical investigations of rock properties, and effects of electric current treatment and acoustic treatment on well production. Audience: This volume is of interest to petroleum engineers, scientists and engineers in reservoir simulation, reservoir characterization, chemical engineering, petroleum and chemical software engineering, postgraduates and PhD students in petroleum engineering, geophysics, geology and chemical engineering.

A land between

Rebecca Fish Ewan

"A Land Between explores the central idea of how people's preconceptions and perceptions of a place - in this case, Owens Valley - influence their interventions on the land. Rebecca Fish Ewan draws on primary sources, oral histories, and conversations, offering a story that reaches beyond the oft-told of water wars with Los Angeles. Ewan's essays, illustrated with historical images and her own photographs of the region, provide a complex, multifaceted perspective on the land, the history, and the people of Owens Valley."--BOOK JACKET.

Postmodern geographies

Edward W. Soja

"Written by one of America's foremost geographers, Postmodern Geographies contests the tendency, still dominant in most social science, to reduce human geography to a reflective mirror, or, as Marx called it, an 'unnecessary complication.' Beginning with a powerful critique of historicism and its constraining effects on the geographical imagination, Edward Soja builds on the work of Foucault, Berger, Giddens, Berman, Jameson and, above all, Henri Lefebvre, to argue for a historical and geographical materialism, a radical rethinking of the dialectics of space, time and social being. Soja charts the respatialization of social theory from the still unfolding encounter between Western Marxism and modern geography, through the current debates on the emergence of a postfordist regime of 'flexible accumulation.' The postmodern geography of Los Angeles, exposed in a provocative pair of essays, serves as a model in his account of the contemporary struggle for control over the social production of space."--Back cover.

Issues in Urban Earthquake Risk

Brian E. Tucker, Mustafa Erdik, Christina N. Hwang

Urban seismic risk is growing worldwide and is increasingly a problem of developing countries. This book focuses on recent urban earthquake safety developments around the world; in particular, it provides approaches and procedures for the creation of earthquake damage scenarios (EDS). The articles will stimulate anyone -- scientist, engineer, government official, business leader, international aid provider -- considering an EDS project for a city, and they list some of the questions that should be asked, suggest methods of answering them, and describe some advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. Two articles discuss how the above strategies fared in a pilot EDS project nearing completion in Quito, Ecuador. Finally, authors from fourteen other earthquake-threatened cities in developed and developing countries attempt to summarize the earthquake safety of their cities. In the context of their particular social, economic, political, and technical settings, they discuss needs and approaches to reducing earthquake risk.
