Thoroughly revised and updated, the Second Edition goes further than the first in integrating material from all fields of neuroscience and in discussing brain-behavior relationships. There are two new chapters, one on development, aging, and plasticity of the nervous system, the other on the general features of sensory receptors. There is also new material throughout the text on such topics as cortical processing and its imaging, consciousness and sleep, cognitive functions of the cerebellum, the functional organization of the basal forebrain, pain, clinical disturbances of the somatosensory system, color vision, and cerebral lateralization. In addition, the text has been reorganized to improve its clarity in places, including the chapters on the hypothalamus, the peripheral autonomic nervous system, and the cerebral cortex. About 30 new illustrations have been included, and the book's format has been enlarged and redesigned.

"Although scores of books and hundreds of articles have been written on the subject of autoeroticism or masturbation, none of them has been definitive. Manfred DeMartino has now provided us with a definitive work on the subject. As author and compiler, DeMartino has gone through the existing significant information in this area extracting almost all the really important papers and chapters that have so far been published on autoeroticism and has beautifully woven them into a comprehensive volume. He has omitted virtually no notable aspect of this topic and has managed to include a marvelously representative selection of papers by an imposing array of authorities." -- foreword.

Thousands of Burmese women and girls are trafficked into Thai brothels every year where they work under conditions tantamount to slavery. Subject to debt bondage, illegal confinement, various forms of sexual and physical abuse, and exposure to HIV in the brothels, they then face wrongful arrest as illegal immigrants if they try to escape or if the brothels are raided by Thai police. Once arrested, the women and girls may be subjected to further sexual abuse in Thai-Burmese border where they are often lured back into prostitution by brothel agents who play on their fear of arrest on return to Burma. Thai police and border patrol officials are involved in both the trafficking and the brothel operations, but they routinely escape punishment as, for the most part, do brothel agents, owners, pimps and clients.
